I've got climate control in mine, so I've just had the aircon on the whole time I've had the car. Yesterday the petrol light came on (as it has a habit of doing ) so to economise I turned off the aircon. Flippin eck, it goes like a rocket now!!!!!!! I see what you all mean about the drain on the power!!!! I had a lot of fun driving home I can tell you!

Also, is there a change up light in the facelift ST? Cos the other day I was stuck in traffic and was looking at the dials etc, and I noticed an arrow pointing up within the rev counter. I've never got the revs high enough to see if it is a change up light, anyone else know? (I could look in the book I s'pose )

There is one fitted within the dial on the facelift, but it only works on the lower petrol models and not on the ST. Apparently it lights up on the test mode for the lights though.

Only EECV which is fitted to lesser models has the capability to use the shift-up light.
The ST uses the Visteon "Black-Oak" ECU which can't.
It can't get the engine to run right either.
Why team RS chose this ECU is beyond me as EECV is a far better ECU as it adapts to any changes you make to the engine (Even 99RON petrol)

That is such a shame i use to love the shift light in my focus rs. Even the C-Max has the shift light. wounder why ford decided to use the Black Oak system on the ST for and not stick to a proven system such as the EECV Which adapts to any changes

If only the ST doesn't have a shift light I think that stupid cos is more useful on a ST rather than on a C-max which is a family car not a hot hatch!

Yeah can not understand Ford why take a shift light and different ecu off a hot hatch its crazy. Have to buy a c-max or a lower model Fiesta

IMO shift lights are useless anyway..... when you're driving hard enough to damage the engine the last place you are/should be looking is the dash!!

That and if you need a light to tell you when to change gear you really should practice a bit more!

It's gotta be down to cost again. I bet they are saving 10p in every 2 or 3 hundred cars built .

More than likely knowing ford. They cut back on 4 of the holes in the chassis for strapping down on Mondeo and Focus cuz it saved them 7p per hole per vehicle.

I have two holes in the side of my head that tell me when my engine wants me to change gear

I'm no expert, but my brother is.... he was working very closly on the development of the ST150 ECU and says that Black Oak is just a type of processor that can be flashed like any other with any map. ie... its just a means to running a certain embedded program

For sure, cost is ALWAYS the driving factor when choosing what parts to buy.... a penny in your pocket is better than a penny in somebody elses. (and anybody who doesn't understand this doesn't understand business) I guess if you want to have a better processor then buy a BMW or Audi..... and spend an extra 10k for the same performance

The rev limiter is set at a speed that will not damage your engine.
You can go to the rev limiter in every gear and it will not harm the engine, unless it's cold.
In fact, revving higher more often is better than tootling around at 2-4000rpm all the time as that cokes the inlet valves up and causes sticky valve sindrome (that is when the cam lobe moves away from the follower to let the valve spring shut the valve, but the valve sticks open loosing compression.)
Early Zetec engines suffered with this, that is why it is very important to use Ford oil as it has a cleaner/lubricant in it to keep the valves lubricated.
When you rev an engine over 5,500rpm the valves don't just open and close, they also rotate in their seats/stems due to the speed/force of the air coming past them. This acts as an automatic de-coke to keep them clean.

The rev limiter/shift light actually kicks in at about 250rpm before the rev limiter kicks in.
The light is on the rev counter, which is for reading engine speed so is the first place you should look I think
