If anyone is wandering, this is just to help me revise

Launch a question at me on MSN

1. Select UP TO three statements that are TRUE of von Neumann architecture
[3 Marks]

a) Many computers today are based on Von Neumann architecture

b) Decreasing gap between speed of CPU and RAM + other components

c) Multiple Instruction, Multiple Data is typical of von Neumann architecture

d) Von Neumann architecture relies on separate caches for data and instructions

e) Multiple processors lessen the effect of the von Neumann bottleneck

f) Cache memory makes the bottleneck worse

g) Pipelining makes the bottleneck better

2. ************** means tasks running in parallel, often 1 CPU switching between tasks
[2 Marks]

3. Referring to computer caches
a)If a block can be placed anywhere in the cache, the cache is said to be

Direct mapped
Set associative
Fully associative

4. In a simple computer, cache size = 32 bytes, main memory = 128 bytes. Locations accessed in this order: 19, 20, 22, 23, 24, 1, 6, 7, 16, 81, 87, 2, 1

(assume blocks begin on multiples, e.g. for block size = 2, blocks would begin at addresses 0, 2, 4, etc)

a) What is the largest block size that results in no blocks having to be replaced from main memory? [ x ] bytes
[5 Marks]

b) How many misses would occur if the block size were 16 bytes and locations were accessed in this order: 19, 20, 22, 23, 24, 1, 6, 7, 16, 81, 87, 2, 1
[ x ] misses
[5 Marks]

5. There are three steps that every processor does:
1) ? the instruction,
2) ? the instruction, and
3) ? it

[3 Marks]

6. Select TRUE or FALSE for each of the following statements
[12 Marks]

(multi-choice (TRUE/FALSE/Don’t Know) type question – correct selection gets 1 mark, ‘don’t know’ gets 0, a wrong answer gets –1, so be careful with this sort of question!)

a) The ‘Boot’ section resides in RAM

b) ROM is often used to hold programs for embedded systems

c) ROM stands for Read Only Memory

d) In RAM the order of access to different locations does not affect speed of access

e) Dynamic RAM is the most common type of memory in use today

f) In DRAM a fast register holds the information

g) DRAM has to be refreshed all of the time or it forgets what it is holding

h) SRAM is much smaller than DRAM, as the transistors take up less space

i) DRAM is used for the speed-critical parts (eg cache)

j) DRAM is more expensive than SRAM

k) ROM is a type of data storage device, which is manufactured with fixed contents

l) It retains its contents until the power is switched off

m) ‘register’ : One of a small number of high-speed memory locations in a computer's CPU

n) There is always one register per main memory location, for addressing purposes

o) A register may be directly addressed with a few bits

p) The CPU is the Control Parity Unit

q) It has been replaced on most modern machines by a pipelined stack

r) ALU is the Arithmetic and Logic Unit

s) It is the ‘calculator’ in the processor

t) It cannot perform Boolean Algebra

u) Because of the increasing complexity in modern machines, low-level languages, such as 8086 have to be run on special co-processors

v) A parallel computer has several processors, which may share other resources such as memory and peripherals

w) Pipelining leads to dramatic improvements in system performance, allowing much of the processor circuitry to lie idle

x) In a pipelined architecture, instruction execution overlaps

7) Complete the following sentence:
"A program spends [ x ] % of its time in [ x ] % of its code"
[2 Marks]

8) Complete the following sentence:
?? locality means that recently accessed items are likely to be accessed in the near future.
[2 Marks]

9) Complete the following sentence:
?? locality means that items whose addresses are near one another tend to be referenced close together in time
[2 Marks]

Take it that your doing programing then mate. Not up to this field much more into networking now CISCO certified

These are some tricky questions just had quick look in some of my books for ya and only got answer for number
3.) Fully associative

Sorry mate i'll have another look tomorrow for you

Thats fine

At the end of the day i've put it there for my own revison but if your interested in this sort of thing then go ahead and answer the questions and it will help me revise

You got that right btw

I am doing a Computing Degree and yes it involves alot of programming which is great.

VB.net
Java
OO Java
Lingo - Multimedia Director MX
HTML - Website Design

Computer Mathmatics like this

Lots of Systems Analysis

It covers a big area of computing so it leaves the door open to go into anything really. I enjoy it but my god it's demanding!!!

Have a shot at them if your interested

cool got one right couldnt get in to java tried studying c++ but that blew my mind found VB easier though so went down the line of networking as it was more hands on. Dont know if you find the same or not but i spent over 2 years studying passed all my exams left Ford after being there since school and cant find my feet in computers think got a bigger passion for cars though

Well... when i return home for holiday periods i have to work at ASDA. You can probably understand how much I hate it, but... if you don't... then you do now

Some things are harder than others in computing. I enjoy having something to achieve and working at it, seeing it working and the progress (even if it's only a written piece of coursework) and then handing in something i'm happy with

You never get that feeling working in an atmosphere that people have no ambition or hope in life. This is why I love University so much. At the end of it I shall reward myself with what i've aimed at since I was a young boy, to get a sporty ford. Since I drove an focus at 17 (i'm now 21) i've wanted one... so i shall get one as a prezzie for finishing Uni (hopefully summer 2008) then go on a trip around Europe.

The site is welcome to join... theres 2 members coming already

Scotty

I know exactly what you mean:

1. Select UP TO three statements

Yer i'm getting there, I think i've got quite alot to stick in now... shall go through it again tomoz too. People have been helping me which is always good news and the more times i get comments on this thread, the more i get to associate the questions and answers.

Sounds strange but if you can associate things and visualise them... it's a very good way of revising

Cisco systems, do you enjoy your work?

Good thats the main think then mate and a good way of revising i always find it better to programme a router or a swith rather than reading a book how to do it cuz just switch off it bored me like to visualise it as well...

Cant get into it mate but then again had bad starts this year worked in 2 computer companys one being Rock direct in warwick as customer services assistant found it extremely boring and then worked at Coventry Uni as a technician just re imaging student machines and cleaning them so never really used any cisco (Trying to start my own business up at the mo). Both places said that i was over qualified and i knew more than the management knew. Trouble with me is i miss Ford to much been there since leaving college and 27 now
I would like to go in to a cisco job but its finding how to do it and where to do it. Been studying a MCSE in windows 2000 but that will be out window soon as servers move on. The uni wanted me to sit an A+ but it was so easy

Keep us informed how its going mate and if i can be of any help drop me a message. Good luck

Brilliant, well i'm constantly learning and even thought i only really briefly touch each of the programming languages aferwards i can then advance in what ever field i need to.

If I can be of any help to you then please contact me... I need a better job over the summer holiday as ASDA is making me suicidal so if you get started, give me a bell lol.

Your not far from me anyway!

No probs mate anything to help you out still got all my coursework here not to up on programming though only on Routers and Switches but i'll do my best for you.
Cheers thats really nice of you. Stuck in bit of rut at mo though Got made redundant at Uni and found it hard to get back into computers so hence why starting up on my own even tried going back to ford but nowt going. Not the sort of person to sit on my rear end doing nothing would rather work 10 hours a day than sit around.
If its that bad then mate you are probably best out of it have you tried warehouse work or something along them lines for a bit of beer money?
Yeah thats true only down A45 so not to far away
