My husband used to have a vectra sri and I remember once we got in it to go out somewhere, and it wouldn't start - i looked at the petrol gauge and said 'you've run out of petrol' and he said 'I can't have, it says I've got 2 miles left'

You have to remember that the guage only reads whats in the tank and there is a pipe, fuel filter, fuel pump and injection system still full even when the tank is actually empty. I've had my bike running for about 5 mins without the fuel tank even on it! (stupidly when it did cut out I couldn't work out why )

As for running it dry, its not as big a problem on petrol cars but don't do it in a oil burner; the fuel acts as a lubricant and its important to keep the fuel system primed. Never run one dry myself, but apparently its makes a mess and costs a bit to fix

In fact, I think the oil burning fiestas even have a system that stops you running dry!

I never wait that they nothing in the tank to refuel I also do it whan i got around 60 miles left on the computer don't trust those gauge at 100% On my dad vectra diesel the computer working very weird the more ur drive the mileage u can do! I think the computer work on actual fuel comsuption so on motorway with fuel tank you can do more the 800 miles from the computer !
