Well, I studied journalism related topics at college- English Language, Media, Journalism, Photography and a couple of accredited courses but when I left about 8 years ago I just went for a normal job in an office and did the odd bit of sports reporting for the non-league football papers (I don't really like footy btw!!).
Once I had been at the job a few years I had a few quid (or rather I didn't but the nice bank manager would sort me out!) so I bought the M3 and as a pretty rare car it was used in a buyers guide for a magazine.
I met the editor of the mag when I went down to them for the shoot, got chatting and offered an article on spec to see what he thought. Did that, chased up a couple of times and was offered a the opportunity to do a feature for them a few months later.
Once I had one article in print it was easier to go to other magazines and say 'I'm a writer' (lol!) and I got a fairly regular slot with a BMW magazine over a number of months.
The supercar stuff came about as I was a member of the Classic Car Club in London and a company called ecurie25 moved into the same premises, once again got chatting with them and they were thinking of doing a promo mag so I got involved in that.
So now I work on their magazine (it's 3 or 4 issues per year), do bits and bobs here and there (business publications, online stuff and in-flight mags), work full time in my accounts job and am also doing a lot of work for a new website that will be launching in summer.
Apologies for the long post but that's a scaled down version!! It really boils down to getting the one opportunity and then meeting people who introduce you to other folks in related industries. Truly a case of not what you know but who!!
