Evening all, just registered as I'm looking into getting myself an ST.

At the moment I have a 306 XSI as my daily runabout and an E30 M3 for weekend fun, going to keep the M3 but hoping to make day-to-day driving a bit more enjoyable by chopping the 306 in for an ST.

Cheers

The M3 is a Diamand Schwarz one- it's one of the first few hundred produced so way back from 1986. The box-arched DTM racer one for those who don't know it.

I actually first drove an ST when 5th Gear did their timed lap at Anglesey as my M3 was tested the same day.

I'm looking at going new and at the moment I am leaning towards a white one with Reflex and Technology packs and tints. Not generally a fan of white cars but I think it suits the shape of the ST.

The 306 is pretty entertaining for a daily runaround but it's on an N-plate so getting on a bit now so just fancy something a bit taughter and more focussed but without sacrificing practicality.

Sorry, is that first pic a bit big??

I was thinking of having the side stripes but I have a strange hankering for red stripes so was thinking of going aftermarket.

Nice looking M3 there!! You import it from Germany then? Must be cheaper to buy there than in UK! As for red stripes why not!!

I've had the M3 for coming up to 4 years now and it was in the country with the previous owner for a year before. They're all LHD anyhow so it doesn't make any odds whether you get a UK one (quite rare) or not.

Cheers for the comments! Seems like a friendly (and active!) forum.

Cheers to Chris for resizing the pics.

The Lambo was a car I was writing an article on at the time as I do some motoring and business journalism so unfortunately it was only loaned to me for a few days.

I prefer the black, also had a yellow one more recently though- not as sleek but certainly striking!

Well, it has its perks! But I do actually do a normal job during the weekdays- the writing is a bit of a sideline I started last year but who knows... maybe one day it'll be full-time!

The girlf and I are going to have a look at some dealers on Monday and see what kind of deal we can thrash out. I see Ashbys has been mentioned in other topics and their site certainly seems to have very reasonable prices- would you say that their price is probably the lowest I can expect?

Edit- not too sure if it was Ashbys... 'something' of Ashby?? It has completely gone out of my mind!

Is the motoring/journalism your full time profession or is it a sideline/hobby. Either way, it is pretty damn cool. I would love to be able to test loads of different cars. It will be interesting to hear what you think of the ST when you get it.
Welcome to the site by the way, like you say, we are a friendly bunch

Hello Aron, welcome to the site... The M3 is an absolutely stunning car... E30's were THE M3 and your example looks really mint

Have you been doing track days with it? Looks like a track day in the second photo...

Well, I studied journalism related topics at college- English Language, Media, Journalism, Photography and a couple of accredited courses but when I left about 8 years ago I just went for a normal job in an office and did the odd bit of sports reporting for the non-league football papers (I don't really like footy btw!!).

Once I had been at the job a few years I had a few quid (or rather I didn't but the nice bank manager would sort me out!) so I bought the M3 and as a pretty rare car it was used in a buyers guide for a magazine.

I met the editor of the mag when I went down to them for the shoot, got chatting and offered an article on spec to see what he thought. Did that, chased up a couple of times and was offered a the opportunity to do a feature for them a few months later.

Once I had one article in print it was easier to go to other magazines and say 'I'm a writer' (lol!) and I got a fairly regular slot with a BMW magazine over a number of months.

The supercar stuff came about as I was a member of the Classic Car Club in London and a company called ecurie25 moved into the same premises, once again got chatting with them and they were thinking of doing a promo mag so I got involved in that.

So now I work on their magazine (it's 3 or 4 issues per year), do bits and bobs here and there (business publications, online stuff and in-flight mags), work full time in my accounts job and am also doing a lot of work for a new website that will be launching in summer.

Apologies for the long post but that's a scaled down version!! It really boils down to getting the one opportunity and then meeting people who introduce you to other folks in related industries. Truly a case of not what you know but who!!

Hi, never taken it on track actually other than at Anglesey when I did the afformentioned 5th Gear piece. I am planning to in the future especially once I have a nice new reliable Fiesta to use should I blow it up!

That particular pic is a slow shutter speed down and shot behind the beach-huts at Southend!

How about you come for some fun at Spa this summer. I'll be there on June 6th with Autotrack. I have a post in the events section here but I've not generated much interest so far. Just in case you'd be interested...

Cheers, that does sound good but if I end up buying the ST I may be living on beans on toast for a while and putting an extra jumper on rather than the central heating- money will be a little tight!! I'll keep it in mind though and see how things are going £ wise.

Yeah not the most economic track day around, I know but it really is worth it... If you only have to do one track day a year this is the one... Also, it will be june so you won't need to spare money for heating... and you can walk around in a t-shirt too... see how you feel nearer the date...

You do have a point with the heating!

Although after a few months of beans on toast will anyone want a passenger lap... ;-)?

Cheers for all the welcoming e-mails.

So, after a bit of 'umming and arring' I have decided to go for an ST- I wasn't sure but my 306 has let me down again (sheered gearshift bolt) so it's for the chop as I'd rather pay a bit more on finance for a new car than be hit by random repair costs every few months on an older car.

Anyhoo, like everyone else I'm out for the best deal. I've spoke to one dealer and got a price for the following...

Frozen White
Smoked windows
Tech pack
Reflex pack
Parking sensors

... of £11,500

Now I've seen that some of you guys on here seem to have got amazing deals so what's the best I can hope for on this or is £11.5k pretty much the bottom line?

Well... I could have had mine in six days (they had one exactly like I wanted in), but I couldn't get the finace sorted out that quick so it had to be put back a week and waited 13 days in the end.

Yes it was already sitting in the showroom. I did hear that I'd actually annoyed one of the other salesman there beacuse he'd been planning on taking it outside and having it as a demonstrator and couldn't because I went and bought it.

I'm buying it from Ripple Road Dagenham Motors and apparently the car is already at the Dagenham holding area- hence the speedy delivery. I'll believe it when I see it though, wouldn't be surprised if there were delays- there usually are with such things!

I didn't pick the spec though I just looked through what they had in stock and decided which one I fancied as my girlf is going a bit stir crazy without the freedom of her own car since our Peugeot gave up the ghost. I did let her drive my M3 the other day but she said it felt 'heavy' and didn't really get on with the LHD aspect. Heavy...? Pah!

I think it's just different- the steering is power-assisted but very weighty compared to your average Euro-box as are the major controls.

I guess there is a certain different sensation of heft based it being RWD (that's right-wheel drive ;-) ) and a feeling that you are being pushed along rather than pulled which can be a tad odd for someone who has never encountered rear wheel drive in their driving career.
