My mate and I was looking through the Fiesta brochure because he's looking to replace his rust bucket ka and we noticed that the ST top speed had a star next to it. In the small print it says 129mhp in FORTH gear so what the hell can it do in fith?

I doubt it will do 129mph in 4th gear most probs a miss print or something

someone said to me on here that the ST has a short box, and they thought it would be shorter than my saxo. My saxo will do 115mph at the limiter in 4th so i think the ST will need to be in 5th for that type of speed.

ST has a close ratio gearbox, but i still think its capable of that kinda speed in 4th (revs permitted). The saxo isnt to bad, my girlfriend swears by her vts, but by driving it i dont think its as quick as the fiesta ST.

The ST engine bounces off the rev limiter at 7000rpm, what sort of revs do you expect you'll need to reach 129mph in fourth? The top speed of the car on paper is 129mph, this figure must have been gained whilst ford were testing the car in 5th gear with the engine having nothing left to give!

Dont forget though what your speedo says and what you're actually doing could be wildly different. I use the GPS read out from my Tom Tom Go to get a true speed reading.

The overall top gear ratio is apparently 20.8 mph per 1000 rpm.(According to Autocar test data)

129mph is thus 6202rpm, which is just over the standard peak power revs of 150PS @ 6000rpm (From Ford engine data)

From the Fiesta Sporting Trophy site the standard gearbox ratios for 4th and 5th are 1.108 and 0.878 respectively. This gives a 4th gear overall ratio of 16.5mph/1000rpm which equates to 7827rpm for 129mph in 4th gear.

I would agree with the 4th gear thing, however trying to get the car to go any faster that 130 is quite difficult. I have been on the autobahns at that speed and the chance of getting anything significantly higher is unlikely. It doesnt pull that well at those speeds, not suprisingly either.

at 7000rpm it will be doing 115.2mph in 4th and 145.3mph in 5th
