When I was looking a while back to get a loan i found that the best place was Nationwide BS. The bigger banks advertise lower rates but they are only for people who want to borrow over 10K over at least 4 years. Nationwide do an APR rate of 6.7% standard for however much u want to borrow and also dont charge you for paying of the loan early if you ever find yourself in the position to do so. I'd advise you to have a good look round and dont be pushed into anything by someone trying to make the banks figures look good. At the end of the day its your choice and there is plenty of it.

Your best bet is to look here: http://www.moneysupermarket.com/LoansP/PersonalLoansAssessment.asp

Here you can very quickly compare the various loan companies and clearly see what the cost of the loan will be so you can try various combinations. It is important when you get a loan though to consider you financial record - any black marks against your name and you will either find it tricky or more expensive to borrow money. Always keep an eye on the loan percentage rate when finally applying and also remember that for every application you make a credit check is made on you. The more credit checks done the lower your rating gets (credit checks are recorded).

Good luck!

I work for Lloyds Bank so i'm getting the staff rate of 6.4%, not particularily special but its not too bad (if I was a customer I would be offered 7.9% APR).

Watch out for Alliance & Leicester! Their loans work by you paying the whole expected interest off first BEFORE you start to pay back the money you actually borrowed. This means that if you want to early settle you still pay the whole amount of interest for the term of the loan! Phew!...spoken like a true banker!

Also to get the good rates for an Alliance & Leicester loan you need to be a premier plus account holder, and over 21, else you get a lesser interest rate!!!

Err, isn't this how all personal loans work? If you want to repay it early then they will rebate you for the interest that you would've paid over the entire term i.e. if you settle a 3 year loan after 2 years, then you get a rebate on the interest you would pay in the 3rd year. No bank is entitled to charge you interest over a period where you're not actually borrowing any money...

I spoke to a woman from A+L at the weekend and she said that to get the benefits of the low interest rate whilst only being 20, I can get my parents to open a joint account with me, as apparently only one of the joint holders have to be over 21. Gets me a nice 5.9% loan.
