Ford will argue (quite rightly) that there is no fault with the heated windscreen. It sounds to me like the will have been a small fault (chip most likely) in the screen that will have been the starting point for the windscreen failure. Cyclical cooling and heating of the glass would be considered "normal oporation" but not with a hole in there to start with.

Its just the same as running over a nail and going screaming to ford saying your tyre lost air.

Now, if you can prove that the windscreen was undamaged before failure then you are onto something but I guess that the evidence is long gone and in a tip somewhere.

yeah take the bill to your dealer and demand to speak to the service manager and explain whats gone on and get it sorted under warranty then you will get your money back,if they try and fob you off demand to speak to the dealer priciple.

You can't go in there storming norman-like for a cracked window because its more than likely not a fault with the car! Did autoglass shed any light on what may have caused it? Could you not get it analysed or something, cos without any proof of what caused it, there is nothing anyone can do! they would have to look at the glass which is no doubt now in a skip somewhere.

amanda how do you mean"it might not be a fault with the car" it should not have happened in the first place (oh of course its a characteristic of the car silly me) lets put it this way if the windscreen cracks on a frosty morning when you put the heated windscrren on in my eyes as long as the car is still under manufactures warranty then it should be covered under the warranty, get back to the dealer with the reciept and see what they can do with recovering the costs back to you.

argh! don't shout. sorry i should have been more clearer. if there was a chip in the windscreen. this won't be covered by warranty as its not really a fault with the car, its wear and tear on the window. if its proven there was no chip and it is a fault with the window or heating elements, then yes - ford are at fault. however it is common knowledge that stone chips lead to cracks when the window is frozen then heated whether you have noticed them or not - and this is not fords fault, its no ones fault cos you can't dodge every stone that gets thrown up off the road. its just bad luck. All i'm saying is that it will be difficult to prove either way, seeing as though the glass is no longer there to look at. I mean by all means see what Ford can do but there is no point blaming them, 1. due to lack of evidence and 2. the fact its probabily not there fault. however just to be on the safe side, keep all reciepts and documentation cos if it happens again you know its a fault with the heating elements and you can claim for both panes of glass

well i know what i would have done and i would not have left the service reception without a face to face confrontation with the service manager or dealer principle. and questions answered.

in iron sight really it would have been best to go to dealer with the windscrren as it was with the crack so they could see for themselves.

Wtf? Are you nuts? LOL... Turn up at the dealership with a cracked and broken screen under your arm saying "I demand to see the manager about this!!!". Iceman you really really have to get off this "its a characteristic" obsession of yours coz it aint healthy. Its only £50-70 for pitty's sake and doesnt affect your no claims so what exactly is the big deal? Its not like he's paying £300 - £400 for a new screen is it???? Our old BMW had a chip under the tax disc which my mum "forgot" about but I'm sure if the car had HFS she would have had to deal with it much sooner rather than later!

hi folks,

just gone through the bill left by auto glass, trying to make out the writing!! it does seem the crack was caused by a small chip to the window, although id never seen it, which the frost got into and hence the large crack.

Hmm but Ford should have thought about this and made the glass stronger/thicker. Perhaps you could argue its a design fault. I know that I have at least two chips on mine so am I to expect a crack if I turn the heated screen on? Its no good having a gadget if you cant use it. Windscreens paid for through insurance is still classed as a claim even though the premium does not go up, so if you have 5 windscreen claims within 3 years then some insurers refuse to quote.
