Hello portbhoy. As mentioned above you have a good insight on the part being a piece of spring. But what surprises me is that this would fall out of a car as recent as a Fiesta ST which means it no older than roughtly 2 years. So this begs the question... Are you driving an ST? Not that it makes any difference but I've re-read the thread and there is no mention of your car in it and I'm just worried about this rust level on such a recent car. Other than that a small introduction would be nice if you can spare 5 minutes...

Looks like the spring, yes.
But I agree with the comments that an ST is too young to get a spring that bad.
Make sure you change both springs on whichever axle that has come from as the car will be un balanced.
Don't try to save money and have just one done because the other one is obviously as bad as that and will go soon anyway.

Definitely the spring Keydogg's slaxo has just had this happen on sunday night i think, his is undriveable and i would recommend you try and refrain from driving yours to avoid further damage and cost.
Good luck fixing your car, hope its not too costly!

It can't be an ST, it passed an MOT last January so is well over 3 yrs old. the oldest STs are late 54, so no more than just over 2 yrs old.

For that level of corrosion I'd say at least 10 yrs old.

I've had that happen to a 15 yr old Renault 5 GTX. Took off the spring and welded a new bit of spring on. Cleaned it up and painted it and you couldn't tell the difference. It sat square too!
