As you use your engine you get contamination from burning the fuel and also unburnt fuel washes into the sump watering down the oil

So why does it come out thicker after use?!?

Sorry guys but I can't just let this go; Ford as crap as they are have a recomended service interval for a reason and changing your oil to their guidelines will provide pefectly good protection for your Mondeo engine (that is after all what it is) for its expected life span (8 years tops?)

Yes, changing you oil every outing will do no harm but you'll end up spending a hell of a lot of money in the process and will somehow have to get rid of all that contaminated oil.... lets not forget the whales/tigers here!

None of you have high perormance race engines in your cars, none of you are running turbos and none of you have to change your oil every 4000 miles...... but you can if you want.

I just changed mine at 4000 to get any rubbish out the oil after running the engine in. It doesn't do any harm.

But surely thats what the filter is supposed to do ?
Agreed it dosn't do any harm, but its just adding to the running costs.

Yeah, I changed the filter too. IMO it doesn't really add too much to the running costs, I've changed the oil once extra over the recommended ford period. The extra £30 over 12,500 miles isn't going to bother me much, I could save that much by just wearing my lighter right boot for a couple of long motorway journeys.

The oil for the duratec is synthetic, so all your whales are safe. Not sure if tiger oil would be good for any engine tho!

Dave ST- Why do you think ford (and every other car manufacture) state the service intervals at 12,000 (ish) ?

Steve1981- you hit the nail on the head mate.

They state service intervals at 12,000 etc because that is when the oil needs changing. If you rag your car round a track every now and again...it still only needs changing at approx 12,000miles. The viscousity of the oil is designed to lastfor a minimum of 12,00miles...if it wernt then dont you think that dealers would love to shorten the inteveral to make more money?

Also, with regards to warrenty, dont you think that if leaving your oil changes to 12,000miles would damage or shorten the life of the engine do you not think ford would shorten the interval to avoid paying out on warrenty??

I have to make my point about this, Im a mmechanic and I know what Im talking about....changing your oil so frequently is just pointless!! ( and a waste of £30 quid!)

Also for the chap who doesnt change his oil filter but DOES change the oil... why dont you change the filter? Fragments of dirt etc will be washed straight back into the system from the filter! LOL

Sorry for ranting...rant over.

Bish

Just becasue its synthetic doesn't mean you can pour it down drains!?!? It still has to be disposed of!
