I've decided the time has come to buy my own digital camera as the family one is never there when i want to use it!

Anyway can anyone give me any advice as to what to look for, best model/make etc. Don't want anything too fancy just one that takes decent pics with video and sound capability.

Thanks

personally i like the canon ixus!!

easy to use, good pictures, and video and sound! you have to pay a bit more than a better specced non canon one tho..

Really depends on what you want to use it for, how portable do you want it to be and ultimately your budget!

If it's for nights out and you want something to fit in your pocket / bag the canon ixus is very compact and ideal for this.

If the size doesn't matter so much, I have a Canon Powershot, this is a bit bigger (still fits in my pockiet) and really takes good pictures. (costs a bit less than the ixus too)

I would definitely try and get a camera with optical zoom if you can, as this gives far better quality when you zoom in; my camera will zoom 4x optical and 3x digital, (12x zoom all together).

If you wanted a camera of high quality you'd be looking at digital SLR's, these are much larger and from what you're said I don't think you are looking for this..

I personally think Canon are the best, although I have seen a very good Nikon SLR.

I would do a bit of research around the type you want, check out Ebuyer for some good deals and pixmania, often amazon do have good deals also especially on end of line products.

Nearly forgot, the number of megapixels is only important to a certain degree, if you want to print say up to A4, you would need the bare minimum of 3 megapixel - in all honesty in todays market the megapixels on offer are in excess of this so you'd be unlikely to encounter any problems with regard quality of picture detail.

Hope this helps and the above isn't confusing!

Cheers for the replies guys. Still looking and getting confused .

Was looking at ebuyer earlier today and they do seem to be very cheap compared to other places so i probably will buy from there. Price would ideally be around the £150 mark but i would go higher if i needed to.

This is a nice one, its a step up from my current one, but same shape and I imagine same user menu's etc which is really good. £125 will leave you some cash for memory cards, batteries, cases etc.Link 1

Same here.
I've got an Ixus 850 and I'm very pleased with it.

I got mine from amazon which seemed cheap enough. There's also acecameras.co.uk who are very reasonable. The only place I would avoid is pixmania. They're mega cheap but that's cos the cameras come in from France with no English instructions and can be tricky to return.

I have an Olympus D-423 that i bought about 18 months ago.

The 2 biggest problems with this type of camera is,

1/ It does'nt have a view finder, in other words, you have to hold it in front of you and look at the screen which is only about 2 inches sq. Verrry anoying on a sunny day, as you need the sun behind you when taking a pic.

2/ The auto focus. If you are taking pictures of cars on a track going past at high speed it does'nt focus fast enough, the outcome, just a blur.

I think that the Ixus is a great buy for you Lisa. .

It is a good camera the Ixus! But I think most are over £200, you can get some for less.. but if £150 is your total budget go with the one I said as this will get you a decent SD card, camera, and case :D:D:)

Thanks for all the replies. I think im gonna go for the IXUS 70 which i've found for around the £150 mark. After remembering that my car tax and my first service is due at the end of next month i think i really need to find one around my budget
