I have had the ST for 9 months now and had lots of fun in it without any trouble from the police.

But this week I think I have been done twice with mobile speed camera vans.

I was just wondering on 2 things:

1) Do the mobile cameras work in the dark as 1 may have got me coming home from work

2) Does the 10% (or 10% +2) still apply? I was doing 80mph on a dual and I didn't see the speed van until it was too late. I was hoping that if the 10% thing still applied then I would have up to 77mph. I know my speedo is out a bit because there is a speed detector thing that shows your speed that I have passed doing 30mph and it shows me doing 28mph.

I hope someone knows more about speeding fines than me!!!

Some of them do unfortunately, though they need to be special ones to work in the dark. I know that Cumbria police bought some last year to catch people at night.

If your local police force uses this discretion on their normal fixed cameras, then its almost certainly likely that they will also use it on the mobile ones as well.

Hi there, yes some speed van do work in the dark, however the rule still applies 70mph+10%+2 is 79mph so you were 1mph out. you MAY get off with it mate but depends on the force and that. (this rule dosent always apply in roadworks though)

The speed boards that i think you mean are outside schools etc, they are NOT calibrated and thats why the speed is properly so far out, there is one in my area which is about 5mph out so that just an example. The speed boards do not catch you or fine you, its just a warning sign about your speed.

chris see your from south wales, so hope this helps you. will add to that now, quite a few speed vans operate in the dark in south wales, any other info you need just ask me. hope it was not in the roadworks in bridgend mate, zero tolerance there, my mate was done.

a couple of us met up last weekend to discuss our cars you should of joinned us mate.

any other answers you want feel free to ask me.

Oh yes, don't worry about them they are inaccurate, and don't give out fines. Theres a set on one of the main roads here that are meant to warn you to slow down if you're speeding, but theres been times when I've gone past as low as 45 (its a 60 zone) and they've flashed at me!

It wasn't in BRidgent luckily but it was on the way back from Brecon coming near to Neath. I heard they are bastards there!
If they have zero tolerance what if your speedo is out, which ours probably are even if only a tiny bit?

Also I had never seen speed vans in the dark, that is very sneaky as I never worry when in the dark, especially on the M4! Atleast when its light you can look out for the vans

Yup, thats all you can do now Chris. Hopefully you will be alright, and if you have then thats great, but nothing you can about it now, so no use worrying about it.

You want to get a RoadAngel or summit like that for future. Then you will know where they all are - "Laser Laser check speed" it shouts lol.

I have only been driving over one year now, so still got the whole 2 year - 6 points rule - so far so good!

Agree that having a detector is very useful - I've had an Origin b2 for a few months and I find that if I'm going somewhere I'm unfamiliar with it is good to know that something is watching out for me!

Be careful with the Road Angel as the one I borrowed DIDNOT work in my ST, somthing to do with the windscreen. It worked a treet in the MG though!

Yup, need to watch out for that prob, the heated windscreen will interfere. I don't know if the RoadAngel has a separate antenna from the unit or not - with the detector I have I have the receiver wired up to sit next to the parcel shelf at the back.

I have had the New Road Angel now for ages in my ST and have never come accross a Laser with it plugged in! (just my luck) would it not work with a Laser then because of the heated screen?

It still picks up all the other cameras no probs at all, thats probably because these are all loaded in the Road Angel Database anyway?

I mainly use my TomTom for all the cameras and stuff now although it don't pick up the Lasers it shows you where they may be lurking...

:-)

Again not entirely certain here, but does the road angel have like a separate receptor (from the rest of the unit) for picking up lasers/mobile cameras? Its just that thats what my Origin has, and I have the receptor attached to the corner of the windscreen where the little wires don't go through the glass and it works fine there.
