It only lasts until the car is proper warmed up, but tends to be loud from outside.

Tappets maybe?? or is that completely different?

mine does this for about 1 second after its fired when i turn it over, because the oil pump hasnt got oil upto the top of the engine quick enough, so the whole cam contact with valves happens with not alot of oil. Im not the only one to have this either!

it's called piston slap

Where there is not buffer between the piston head and cylinder wall or roof, and it literally is the sound of the piston head clinking.

This happens when the oil is too thick and not fluid enough, oil quality is bad or no oil at all.

It is very common in high performance cars where fully synthetic oils are required to keep a fluid smooth motion on the fast moving compressed piston heads.

Considering the recent temperatures it's no surprise.

There could be another reason for the 'ticking' at start up......

The duratec engine is 'timed' by a chain rarther than a belt, the chain runs inside the engine and is tensioned by oil pressure, on initial start up the engine oil is thick and may take a second or two before it reaches the required pressure to enter the tensioner valves, meaning the chain is a little slack and may rattle a little, this is why regular oil changes are so important on our cars!

Lack of oil maintenance will result in premature chain and tensioner wear and may even damage the engine!

If the ticking noise does not dissapear as the engine warms I would suggest checking oil level (when cold) and mayb an oil and filter change would help....

Hope this helps

It hasn't been long since I had a service from jamsport and they sorted my oil out.

I may be wrong but...doesn't the cold weather (Larger heat changes between being cold and being warmed up) cause the oil to deteriorate faster?

Not really, when its colder the oil will be thicker so generally harde to shift about but the engine will have been designed with this in mind.

Don't think its tappets altho JS said to me that it was.

Had my mechanic check it out and he recons nothing wrong with the tappets since then done a track day and general driving with no probs
