i hope you have a trouble free journey down
It's not normally that bad, it usually only takes four hours to get to the midlands. The problems just because of the bridges on the A596 and A597 through Workington that have collapsed forcing everyone to do a 20 mile detour to get round the road closure which in turn is causing massive congestion (2 hours) to get through a few miles of the A66 - the route I have to use to get out of West Cumbria - and there aren't even any minor road alternatives available.
Unfortunately it's going to be that way for quite a long time as it's now expected to be 3-4 years before the two collapsed bridges are replaced as the Highways Agency is refusing to contribute anything for their replacement and Cumbria County Council can't afford to pay the £10 million cost either at the moment.
