Get a clean cloth and put a small amount of petrol on it. Rub this onto the tar and it should come off with a bit of work. I honestly didn't believe this until I tried on mine. It doesn't hurt the paintwork at all.

As Stuart says petrol works a treat for removing tar from bodywork. In fact the tar remover you buy in aerosols is pretty much petrol in a can... Don't bother buying it like I did...

I use bug & tar removal wipes. I've also found that they work well on my alloys (especialy on the bits of brake dust right in the corners).

...just out of curiosity, would diesel do it? or would that damage paintwork do you think?

One thing though, make sure you wash and wax the area after, as the petrol will also remove any preserve you have on.

Just wondering if this would work for paint aswell?? Got some red paint miraculously appear on the passenger side of my car and didn't shift when I washed and waxed her yesterday!!
