How come it is just as cheap infarct cheaper to insure a 1.6 zetec s 2007 new than it is to insure a 1.25 2004 fiesta?

The zetec s is 2500 and the firefly is 2971 and 599 on direct line but i have to be the legal owner and i can modded it at all

Any ideas?

Bet there is a mistake somewhere in that. Best thing to do is do a new quote for your mom as main driver and you as named driver then you should see a big different in the price i reckon you could get it down to 1000. try http://www.ecarinsurance.co.uk/ they are good.

Probably because new drivers are more likely to pick the smaller, less powerful car. So there are more young inexperienced drivers driving them. Something daft like 25% of new drivers make a claim in their first year. Hence the cost of insuring that kind of car goes up.

I read a post on a forum once from an 18 year old who got a BMW 518. Cost him half what a fiesta did because it's not a typical first car.

I think you're wasting time looking at zetec S type cars. It's too much welly for a new driver and you're odds on to prang it anyway. Get a shed on wheels and get some no claims under your belt first.

I know.

But look at something that costs a lot less. You'll be mortified if you ding a nearly new £5000 fiesta.

It's not such a pain if it's a £1000 Fiesta/Ka that's got a few war wounds anyway.
It makes a huge difference getting a years no claims. Also have a look at the passplus scheme. You can get big percentages off for that too.

zenicman: Car insurance sucks - you seem to be just discovering this but trust me most of us already know! I'm sure we've all had our share of ludicrous insurance quotes, and yes you are unfortunately in the worst possible situation of being a young, inexperienced, male driver with no accumulated NCB.

There are really only two ways round this:

(1) Get insured as a second driver on someone else's policy (preferably an oder someone with a few years NCB who doesn't mind the risk of having you on their policy). The problems with this approach have already been pointed out, and unless you go with one of the few insurers who will give named drivers a NCB, you won't accumulate any and you'll probably still be stuck having to insure yourself in a few years anyway.

(2) Get a seriously cheap car with a seriously low insurance group. This does NOT include a Zetec S, and as you've discovered may actually require you to choose something cheaper and crapper even than an older Fiesta 1.4 - sorry, but that's just the way insurance is. It isn't always logical, and it IS always expensive.

We can all appreciate that you're frustrated, but it's a necessary evil Unless you're prepared to accept Third Party, or Third Party, Fire and Theft rather than Fully Comp (something you could maybe consider if you get a really cheap car...), then you are going to have to pay to insure yourself.

Best thing you can do is keep ringing around insurers and getting quotes. Have you tried asking the insurers themselves why it's cheaper to insure a Zetec S than a 1.4? It might be a mistake on their system for all we know...

Anyways: Best of luck to you, hope you find something suitable.

Be sure to try Greenlight, More Than and Adrian Flux, I've heard good things about all of them!

EDIT:

By the way, it's clearly not all insurers who charge more for the 1.25 Firefly. I just went and got some quotes from Direct Line, assuming the following information (since I don't know your details):

19 years old
0 NCB
CV32 postcode

For the Firefly 1.25 (2004), I got quoted:

£1,582 (driving for 1 year)
£1,367 (driving for 2 years)

and for the Zetec S (2007):

£1,980 (for 1 year)
£1,710 (for 2 years)

Just FYI.

I just googled for them and found this thread that you might want to read
http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/showthread.php?p=1558172#post1558172

At the end of the day it's hard to cut corners in car insurance for first time drivers.

You just need to bide your time and get some cheap motor and a years no claims (possibly also pass plus) and it'll drop quite a lot after year 1 and heaps when you turn 21.

I'd love an Aston but I couldn't afford to insure that either. You have to start somewhere. In my case a £500 metro I bought off my brother. Yeah it's a shed but it gets you through the first year.
