cheers mate! if the engines in the focus and fiesta are the same then surely it would be easier to copy what ever ford did to it to get 170bhp than using dreamscience and induction kits then start tuning from there? or am i wrong?! im not that technical minded when it comes to tuning, i know the basics! any body else know anything?

Zetec-E engine was timed to out of production with C170 Focus.
Duratec-HE is the better replacement.
148PS in standard trim plus all aluminium construction vs 130PS in standard trim with a heavy cast iron block.

The correct question should have been:
Why didn't Ford use VVT technology and coil on plugs ignition and a Denso engine ECU (PCM). Like Mazda have.
The answer would be:
Because that would have cost about $50 per car more and Ford are tight.

Hope that helps

noooooo that would be the correct question from some one with knowledge of the engine, my question was from me - some one that has little knowledge on the subject!

Basically, the engine was out production before the ST was started.
The ST170 engine wasn't that good anyway.
Ford SVT developed it (in the USA) and it struggled to meet Euro III Emissions regs.
People had alot of running troubles with them!
Funily enough, like we do with trying to meet Euro IV !!

aaah that makes sense! so could ford of squeezed more power out of it? im not complaining about the power cos im more than happy with my , it just seems a bit like they short changed us when they tuned up the 130ps engine for the focus and as you said in earlier post, the st engine is stock 150ps!
its a shame really cos ford could of really pissed honda and renault off bigtime if they increased the power toward type r and clio182 territory ! my mate has a civic type r but i find it a bit boring! test drove renault sport clios and wasnt impressed with the build quality (had laguna and it was a big let down so im not a renault fan) or handling compared to the fiesta plus the fiesta is good value for money in my oppinion!
thanks for your help dave!

Ford used the Peugeot 206 GTi as the benchmark when they developed the ST that's why they match the BHP and price.
It also helps with insurance costs.
I think the car doesn't need more power, just to run better.
The basic ignition/management system struggles to cope with having to meet Euro IV emmisions levels.
The Mazda MX-5 2.0 Sport has exactly the same engine as ours but with VVT, coil on plugs and a better brain, throttle body and catalyst.
Go and have a test drive in one, you be amazed at how the same engine can perform so much better!!

the Mazda is faster but because the MX5 is lighter as well! so that could explain the good performance! and also the 2L is available with 6 gears!

Yes you're right, but I'm not on about overall performance but how well the engine runs.
The MX-5 is actually 10 BHP up on the ST but torque is about the same.
