Hi all, gotta be quick typing this.

My pc has started to turn off shortly after turning it on, started yesterday.
Have had the side off and gave it a good clean..loads of dust, but it's still happening.

The error report says..'Display driver seems to be responsible for the system instability', what's a display driver?

Thanks in advance.

Have you done any updates other than the normal Windows updates recently Kevin (i.e. a graphics driver update)? If so I'd first try rolling back the update (uninstall it and return to the old driver).

Otherwise to try and make your computer more stable (as well as to try and determine for sure if this is your problem) try turning off HW accelleration:

1. Right click on your desktop
2. Select "Properties" from the context menu
3. In the "Display Properties" dialog select the "Setting" tab
4. Click ont he "Advanced" button
5. In the dialog box that displays select the "Troubleshoot" tab
6. In the "Troubleshoot" tab drag the "Hardware accelleration" slider all the way to the left (None).
7. If the "Enable Write Combining" checkbox is available, clear it
8. Click OK to dismiss all open dialogs

If your problem does not resolve like this then I'd say it's not your display driver that is causing it.

Good luck.

Cheers Nick, will print out and try. I'm using windows XP home edition.

If there has not been an update done recently then you may actually want to do one...

First you should check what drvier version you are currently using, then go to the graphics adapter manufacturer website and see if a more recent version is available. There is also an option in Windows to search for a driver automatically but I would not use this as it may install a driver which is older than the latest available, particularly if there has already been an update done on your computer. Anynway here is what you should do:

1. Right click on the desktop and select Properties
2. Select the Settings tab and click on "Advanced"
3. Select the "Adapter" tab which should look like this

This is how it looks on my computer... in red is the information about what graphics adapter is installed on your computer (Make and model of the adapter). Use this information when searching on the manufacturer's website (in my case www.nvidia.com) for the most recent driver version.

4. Then click on the "Properties" button in this dialog
5. In the dialog that appears select the "Drivers" tab.

It should look something like this:

In red is the graphics driver version information. Use this information to determine if the drivers available at the website for download are the same or more recent than the ones you installed.

With all this information at hand you now have 2 options:
1. If your current driver is the same as the one available for download on the website you should try to Roll Back (there is a button to do this in the last dialog screenshot) to the previous version which was installed.

2. If your current driver is older than the one available for download on the website you should download the newer driver and install it. Usually downloaded drivers can be installed using a simple and automatic executable (careful though... scan it for viruses anyway before executing) so you should not need any of these dialogs any more.

Hope this helps.
