Dose the power point in the front of the car ever turn its self off.

I use a radar detector and its getting annoying having to unplug it every time I stop the car, in case I empty the battery.

dose it eventually turn off on its own ?

No, the 12 volt power outlet next to the gear stick is a permanent live.

Im sure it recomends anyway that you unplug stuff before switching on engine incase a surge kills your device.

You should be able to set your GPS to turn off after a set time...

My Origin B2 GPS Radar has this facility and i have it turn off after 5mins.

Also my Tom Tom XL turns off when its not being used...

Besides... you should ALWAYS remove your GPS from your car when you get out to avoid any unwanted theft or damage to your car... this shouldn't even be an issue?
