Hi,

I let my brother be insured on my car so let him take my car out for the first time today. however i am a little worried about somthiing.

Basicly when he was driving he kept missing 3rd gear and putting into 1st instead. so when he was moving up 35-40mph it was going down to first and the engine was racing. He done this about 4-5 times, do you think this will cause any long lasting damamge to the gears or clutch? I have driven the car since and it feels fine.

Just wanted to know your thoughts on this?

many thanks

hmmm its definately not good for the gearbox or engine as such doing it! he needs to push the gearstick up and it goes into third automatically. Tell him to be gentle and it basically does it for u rather than using alot of strength!

not sure about long term damage but it doesnt sound good does it?!

like my mate says - if you cant drive it, leave it at home!

i would remove him from the insurance and only let him ride shotgun if it were my car.

Yeah wont let him drive it again, but i have driven it since and all seems fine. Think I got away with it. What worried me aswell is that its only dont 1500 miles so is still running in realy.

He kept doing this because in his golf he had to force 3rd gear in. I did try to explain that you should bring it to (N) first then go strait up.

overall though think i got away with it. I think it would have gone bang by now.

You don't even have to go into neutral mate, just gently push the gearstick directly upwards and it slows in automatically. Only way he getting it into first instead of third is by pushing the gearstick to hard.

Doesn't sound like your brother is a particularly good driver .... The ST gears are very precise and I find it hard to imagine selecting 1st gear instead of 3rd, I don't think I have even come close. Take him off the insurance before you need to claim for a new gearbox or worse, engine !!

Get your brother off the insurance ASAP. I lent someone my old Focus and when i took it back, they had F'd the gears. I would never let anyone touch mine, lesson learnt.

sorted now, i have explained to my bro and he will remained insured but will only drive it as an absolute last resort. Has own car anyway. In other words i will never let him drive it again.

Im sure the car is ok, i just hope that in 1-2 years i dont find that the gears or engine has blown just because of a madd half an hours driving. Im sure though that they do build those engines well so i dont think any harm done. I was more worried long term.

Really dont think you need to worry. If you were doing it ALL the time then yes your engine could well pack in, but from what you said i cant see it having any lasting damage.
