Have you tried wonder wheels or another stong type of alloy wheel cleaner? It could just be stains on the wheels if they have not been cleaned for a while.

it could be dried baked on brake dust try wonder wheels by carplan it comes with a brush to brush on to the alloy wheel and it foams up, leave it on for a few mins and swill it off or hose it off,end result a sparkling alloy wheel,i swear by it.

Yes, I agree, I've used it for a while now but one thing to note.
I used it on my VRS and my Renault before that and I must admit, the wheels were both tarnished and there were quite bad 'bubbling' on several areas of those alloys. I would say the same goes for most acid based cleaners, the wheel laquer will not protect the alloy for long.
It's VERY corrosive and I only use it now when the wheels (mostly the front) get heavily 'dusted'. I would recommend just a sponge and small brush when you wash your car, that does the job. Then occasionally use an acid based cleaner.
Remember to 'rotate' the wheels from front to rear (normal procedure to even tyre wear) and that way the wheels get an 'even dose' of acid.
Just thought I'd mention this for those who intend to keep thier car for a while.

Yes Jon that can be the case. I minimise use of the stuff too, I have found it to be ok if you don't leave it on for longer than a minute, but I have heard people having problems where they left it on too long and it's left marks.

I think it actually warns you not to leave it on for longer than a minute also? As long as you only use it occasionally on areas that genuinely have got brake dust build up, and rinse it off quickly, then you should be ok, as it should then only be attacking the actual build-up rather than the alloys.

Poor boys do a gel based cleaner which is alot less harmfull to the alloy. You just have to leave it on for longer.

I've been using Wonder Wheels for years... Get it... won't disappoint... Be prepared to spend quite a while on doing it though as it requires quite a bit of rubbing if it's caked on!!!

take the wheel off the car, and clean with safe-cut paste(it comes in a tube, it's liquid in the bottle), and scrub with a clean cloth, and rinse. u'll need a lot of elbow grease but it does come off.
