When i got my car just over a month ago i got 12 months tax with it. When my private plate was switched over (couple week later) a new tax disc was sent to the dealer but when i collected this there had been a mistake made and my disc was due to expire May 2008.

The dealer said he had never seen this before and would get onto the DVLA to sort out. I still have the May disc and he phoned me a couple of days ago asking if i had heard anything and when i explained no he said he would chase up. I am going to call him again tomorrow but how do i stand with this legally? what happens if the DVLA dont provide me with the disc i have paid for before the end of May?! anyone any ideas?

you want to speak to the DVLA mate, they issue it they should have the details and get it sorted for you

Have a quick search on the dvla site. Might not come up as you have just changed the reg but might tell you if the tax is due.

As the law stands you wont be able to drive the car on the road without displaying a valid disc regardless of whether you have paid for one. I would not take the risk and leave it off road if it hasn't arrived by the end of next week.

I know what you're saying as you can be fined for not having a valid tax disc displaying, even if you have paid, and even if as in this case it's the DVLAs fault. I'm not sure that taking the car off the road would even work though, as a SORN declaration hasn't been made. In which case if they don't sort it then I'm guessing that the only way round it, annoying as it would be, would be to have to pay the tax AGAIN and then try to claim it back.

But the tax has been paid for so there should be no reason for them to come looking for the car. Obviously they could get funny if it was spotted but I really doubt that would be a problem at all. Besides it would hopefully only be for a little while until the tax disc arrived.
