Hi all,
Just a quick bit of advise realy, do you think it would be wise to remove the spare wheel? Was just thinking that the tire in the back is quite a lump and even if i was to break down, I must admit i dont know how to change it anyway. Just carrying around a load of usless weight. As anybody else done this? Would it fail an MOT?
THANKS.

I haven't, but less weight means better MPG and faster ! I also carry sealant too, very likely I would use this as it would be quicker and safer than swapping by road side. Remember though for sealant you must carry a tool to remove the valve (so the instructions say on the can), I assume little air is lost as the sealant blocks the puncture and valve although putting it back after might be sensible (any one comment more on this ?). You may also create more boot noise within the cabin too in the absence of the wheel.

when u use that tyre foam stuff u cant have the punture repaired so have to hope the stuff works as well as it says...or else its new tyre time for a punture tht could cost a couple of pound if u change it then put it in to get repaired somewhere....

It wouldnt make a difference unless you start removing door cards, rear seats, air con, speakers and so on aswell.

it all adds up and makes a difference some of the time, a spare wheel and a full tank of petrol (and any other uneccessary junk) can affect your mpg and mph. My car was much noticeably slower with a full tank than half a tank or less.

you sure it wasnt the difference in atmosphere though? that is the only difference i have ever noticed in my car, its quicker when its cold outside as the air is denser. Obviously when you have 3-4 people in the car it makes a noticable difference too - but then your talking 150-300kg more.
The difference between a full tank and a nearly empty tank is negligibe imo - as its 45kg difference - thats like having a child in the passenger seat. Round a track i doubt it would make even a second difference.

I was toying with the idea of taking out the spare - its certainly more than 4-5kg so should bring a decent improvement in mpg. Just remember that every little helps!
Never used the sealent stuff but to be honest, if you've got AA/RAC cover then who cares if you get a blow out..... being towed by a van looks far better than running on a skinny tyre!

yep a blow is a different matter, I have breakdown cover. Shame it didn't come with an alloy spare, which is heavier the skinny steel or the alloy ?

I can understand what you're all saying perhaps about the weight, but I'm still not so sure about the safety side of doing so. Obviously a sealant thingy would help if you had a minor puncture, but for nothing more. I've been unlucky enough to have a tyre blowout on a previous car. I managed to safely pull the car away from the road, but the tyre had a 3-4 inch tear flapping about, and I know that there's no-way in the world that I'd have been able to seal it up in those circumstances, and I wouldn't have felt it safe trying to do so.
If anyone doesn't feel able to change a tyre then either spend 10-15 minutes practicing, or leave it in the boot and if you were to have a puncture call the AA/RAC/whoever out.
My Tyre went bang on me this afternoon whilst doing 70mph on the A34. Because I managed to control the car and pull it to one side I was able to change it at the side of the road. Yes it wa sa pain to do and some people are knobs and don't give you any room even though you are there with the blinkers on etc but I'd always carry a spare wheel.
