Hi all. Am not really a `mod` kind of person but want to get some new HT leads for my ST, I have read that it improves the idle of the car. My first question would be `which leads should I get?`. Bosch ones from Halfords for example or better ones designed for the ST? Second, how easily does the airbox assembly come off to access the leads? Thanks

I had a set of Magnecours on mine and TBH, couldn't really notice much difference. Standard Ford ones are of better spec than what Halfords sell anyway.
What did make a difference to the idle quality/starting though was the extra engine earth strap that I fitted.

tell us more dave, what parts of the car did you fit the extra earth strap to, where would I get one. Mine now is a smoother tick over only because of the mountune settings which now has it at 1000 so less lumpy anyway, but sounds like a good tip from you.

you won't notice anything from just changing the leads alone. Pre-mountune I changed plugs to Denso and leads to Magnecor, there was a small but noticable difference, slightly smoother tick-over and slightly sharper on throttle. If say your due for new plugs and leads are looking a bit rough I would upgrade at that point. If you have spare cash then do it anyway, colour leads look better..............

I used an earth strap that was used on the Jaguar S-type and I earthed the cylinder head to the N/S suspension turret. You can buy earth straps from Halfords in varying lengths though.
My main reckoning for this was that I had followed the engine harness from the alternator to the battery and found that there was only one earth which was doing everything and going to the battery not the body. It splits off to the body below the battery. Using experience gained from the Jaguar XJ being all aluminium, we had to put extra earths everywhere on that car so as to get better conductivity through the bodyshell. As the cylinder head on the ST engine is Aluminium I thought "Mmmm what's getting the negative spark plug voltage away from the engine?".
I fitted the strap from the N/S rear engine lifting eye bolt to the forward front strut nut on the N/S.
The idle was alot smoother, throttle responsiveness improved and initial start up was alot quicker. My next plan was to earth the exhaust system to aid the number1 & 2 HEGOs as the only get their earths from the exhaust manifold bolts through the exhaust gasket.
Try it it won't cost the earth (Pardon the pun) and I found it made a slight difference.

No, No issues, it's just an earth. The more earths the better the system works, the less earths, the less it costs!! TVM rules OK

As you look at the engine from the front of the car the engine lifting eye is at the rh rear of the rocker cover, right by where the breather pipe comes out of the rocker cover.
Undo the 13mm bolt that fixes the lifting eye to the cylinder head and refit with the earth strap. Torque is 40nm for that fixing so make sure it's tight.
