Hi all

any idea when the limiter kicks in? The rev counter goes to 8 000 revs and today I was up at about 7 500 revs & the limiter had still not kicked in, so I'm curious to know when it kicks in...

cheers

Yep it def kicks in around then, i had it up around 7500ish and the throttle cut out so i guess you cant have been very far away. It was a very odd feeling cos i didn't really realise i was quite up so high in the revs, thought i was at about 6500 not 7500 In my defence i did have the music up a bit loud to hear the engine

7500?!? Surely thats welllll in the red?

going in the red will cause permanent engine damage so i wouldnt do it again...
no point at all going over where peak power is (around 6300ish), so slowing down at anything over this

Never bother to take mine over about 6000rpm.

I dont think it matters much if you go into the red once in a while, these engines I'm sure can take it. My Golf 3 Gti which I had for 5 yrs never minded an occasional Foray into the red, similarly my Audi A3 Turbo which I had for 2 yrs, if you got decent oil in I dont reckon it'll do any harm. Obviously if one does it all the time thats a different story...

There's no harm taking it into the red. the whole point of the rev limiter is that anything above that certain rpm is damaging, so it's perfectly fine to take it up to the limiter.

Hi JoopST

I'm pretty sure, I was at about 7500 had it hadn't kicked in yet, but I'll check again...great, another excuse to push it, not like one needs an excuse though...hehe. Cheers

I don,t think that you would cause any damage with the occasional trip up to the limiter.I,ve done it once but theres no need to go up that high theres no power. But, I think that if you change at 6300 where peak power is,you loose too much when you shift because you are not in the power band for the next gear.I change at about 6800 and I get good acceleration all the way.
