Do you really find the handling that good?
Last night i gave it a bit of stick and it just let go...sliding all over the place
Always wary about giving it too much just feels too on edge
My astra sxi seemed to be alot better handling
My mate drove his bosses and he said the samething it was all over the place and you got no warning of when it was going to go it just went...
Like to hear your comments as it is supposed to be such a good handler

I agree handling is not the best, to me it feels really well planted and very directional (sort of point and squirt) at low speeds, but it starts to feel a little vague at high speeds. I'm running the std suspension at the moment and I guess lowering it a tad would help.

I have the chance to take some sweeping bends on the way to work and when pushing hard it does not inspire confidence, but only had the ST since Dec do not tried it on warm sticky tarmac.

Part of the problem I think is the 40 profile tires, the lower the profile the smaller warning they give when they reach the limit of grip. My old Mini 1275GT used to slide nicely (with control) on the 10inch rims and baloon like tyres.

I think that is the nail on the head.

The is planted at all speeds. Now is the wrong time of year to push these cars anyway but most will struggle in these conditions.

What tires have you got? P-zero are crap and even worse in this weather.

As for being vague at high speeds. As long as your smooth it will really reward you and suprise alot of faster cars. It can snap but tbh my foucs snaps quicker than the st and gives you no warning. The st you get a little slide to tell you your at the limit then it snapps.

Best thing is wait until the spring/summer and then the car will really shine.

This is the older part of me speaking now but i wouldn't reccomend driving at speed this time of year anyway!! It's just stupid.

Saturday i saw a clear example of this when a mg zr went into the side of an astra coming the other way. Mg was really going for it and hit a bit of ice. End result i did'nt recognise the mg until i spotted the badge. And the astra had front & side airbags deployed.

Just take it easy at this time of year guys n girls. Its really not worth risking if there is any ice about.

My view is I very much like the way the car handles, I don't drive like an idiot however (and I'm not saying anyone here does).

I've seen this all over the site...

"What tires have you got? P-zero are crap and even worse in this weather."

And every time I read it I'm confused, my car is about 9 months old so still original tyres, original everything in fact. Anyway if the standard tyres are so bad why have Ford stuck them on the car? Hold on I think can answer my own question... cost cutting?

I only picked mine up on Jan 2nd and have already nearly been caught out in this awful freezing weather. It seems stange but as you really push on with some poke it into corners (given during the current conditions) it does feel slightly vague

Bring on the proper driving weather and I'm sure everything will be better

My ST has some cheepo cack rubber, they are about £40 a pop, but thats what came on it when I bought it, probably not going to replace them 'till they are worn.

But I have owned 10 cars over the years, 5 have been hot hatches so I know how the car handles, I only spank it like a numpty whan it's safe to do so, but it's not as planted at speed as my last 2 cars, nor is is as quick.

Still like the ST for what it is tho

The tyres have got a lot to do with it plus I found that there was not enough give in the suspension over bumps etc and that used to knock you off line.

The chassis is set up for lift off oversteer as well.

The tyres would have been a deal done with Pirelli, they won the bid, probably $5 per car.

I have PZero Neros on my TDCi yet suffer NO over/understeer whatsoever, funny that.

I do get wheelspin on take off though.

Tyres isalmost certainly the main problem here for both Adam and Unclebadger.

The P zeros are terrible except on good road surfaces in the summer time.

Pazza, no idea why Ford thought p zeros were a good idea, I suppose it is viewed as a quality brand, they were certainly highly ranked by myself until I drove the ST.

In this weather it isn't exactly sensible to be booting the ST on roundabouts and the like. You need to know the cars (and your own) limits, and really only test this when there's no one else near you!

I still hve the original p zeros on the back, and the back can get twitchy at times. The front though has been greatly improved and the car was transformed by the replacement of the p zeros. Originall changed for ZZ3s which I recommend and have since put on toyo proxes, which I have no complaint at present, but I look forward to trying it in mild wet and dry conditions, not had the opportunity yet!

Anyways, sort out your tyres guys, the ST really doesn't need budget tyres. £12-150 will sort you two new ZZ3s or Toyo proxes

Would certainly agree with you there Dave, there is a roundabout I use a lot, which halfway round has a raise in the road, the back end skips out a bit if you aren't very careful!

I've got P-zeros on my old clio 172 and they've been superb on that, they just don't feel 'right' on my though - very bizarre

Toyo Proxes are lovely and sticky, no doubt one of the best hoops around, however from past experience they didn't last too long. There is always a compromise to be had between the compound of the rubber vs how long the tyre lasts.

However all that said I can't see how the vagueness I feel on dry roads at speed is the tyres. In fact I was so worried after the first time I pushed it I pulled over in a layby to check the tyres and wheelnuts, all was fine. But also (over the Cristmas break) then checked the tyre pressures and jacked up the rear to check things for play, all the bearings and bushes seem fine. No play to be found (and I wouldn't expect it on a car with 22k on the clock)

Realisticly I just think it's the feedback you get and there is nothing wrong with the way the ST is set up, probably just a matter of me building trust and could be partly due to the shorter wheelbase than my last car.
