I haven't got a ZS but I have the 1.6 TDCi Zetec. It's not as fast as an ST off the line (obviously) but through gear performance is fantastic with 205nm vs the ST's 190nm.
It never goes below 50MPG no matter how you drive it. If you spend £250-300 you can have it re-mapped which should push the torque levels over the 250nm mark. (I plan to do this after my first service) Also, the road tax is only £35 for this car.
Once you adapt your driving style to suit the engine, you'll love it.
Best thing I ever did.

to be honest i dont really find the st that fast i find many a diesel fly past me each day on the motorway and often off the lights i strugle to keep up with some diesels i find once i hit 70 its at it best
seems odd, but you have to remember the price comparison. The diesels overtaking you must of been expensive ones. I hammered two cars at lights yestaday, just need to push the car.

A mate has the ZS we were hammering it the other night and it never dropped below 53MPG Does over 500miles to a tank Roughly the same through the gears i think Not as quick off the line as the ST but is still a fast car It has out done many petrol cars espcially on open road where the amount of torque comes into its own

is there not a slightly different suspension set up or something? firmer in the zetec s?
dave ive heard people say that the ford engines stall much easier at lights and when setting off etc is this right? also are the parts for diesals slightly more expensive than petrols?

depends what parts i believe alternators are more expensive as a mate had one replaced... I presume the 2 1.6tdci will have the same power but the car setup in a different way...with the ZS being lower... The TDCI ZS is lower than the ST

Differences:
The ZS has the same suspension set up as the ST plus the ST's front and back bumpers, seats (without the ST logo) and gear selector (short shift)
Powertrain wise, the Zetec and ZS are identical.
Stalling Issue:
Not with the 1.6 TDCi as it does not have a Dual Mass Flywheel
