just been washing car and I noticed I could see inbetween the gap of the lights and bodywork into the unit, from the side of the car not from the rear.
Anyway I can see wires and things ? should this not be sealed or have a back plate, I have never taken a unit off so I don't know what they look like at the back

There is no seal between the lights and the body work I have read somewhere that they can leak water into the boot! If you undo the torx screws which hold the unit on you'll see what i mean. As to your original question can see anything on mine its a snug fit.

yep t'other side is very close and can't see through that gap, this side just enough to make out coloured wires.

Went to ford today and got a new clip and stud for the passenger side rear light as i was not happy with the large gap, the new parts are different to the original parts and pete my mate in stores at ford showed me the parts on his computer screen, so i knew we had the right parts ordered, fitted them tonight and they have sorted the large gap out, the light now sits how it should have done, result for £2.00, he also told me a couple of customers had mentioned this rear light thing to him, so he was aware of the problem.

I showed the warranty manager, and even he agreed there was a difference in the gap with the lights, but said there was nothing from ford on the matter, and I would have to submit a claim and wait for ford to reply, whats the pont for £2.00.
