Hi all,

I keep reading mags and internet articles that say the ST falls behind on some rivals cos it cant hit 60 in second gear. Well sorry Mr Critic but I managed it the other day! For modded ST's accelerating is far quicker but for standard ST's would it be quicker to get to say 50 in 2nd then change to 3rd or hit 60 and then change cos the more you go on in 2nd, the more of an effort it becomes for the engine. (Bearing in mind hitting 60 in 2nd is right at the rev limits).
Any thoughts on this people

I did the 0-60 run in 8.1 seconds and changed just after 55 to 3rd gear.
Maybe if i held it in 2nd might of done it 8.0 something or less.
Its to risky, its so close to the limiter.

i can hit 60 in 2nd, but it is at the limiter, wouldnt do it often.

im sure its not gonna be too bad taking it up to the limiter as long as your not holding it their, im sure ford thought people would do this so the limit was put down a bit to protect the engine.

as remapping it extends the limiter anyway (depending on what you get)

Since all my mods I noticed I can push it to 60mph+ in 2nd and way into 7000rpm but I still wouldn't do it to protect the engine. It's only 2 years old for christ sake lol so we all don't wanna cook all our engines and pipes now do we!?

i guess it depends on whats done to your car, ie, uprated in-engine parts will be better to cope with a higher rpm, but standard or lightly modified its not gonna be doing the engine much good. probably best to just practice changing gear quick enough to keep the power up!

yeah that's right if your engine is standard then 'enjoy' the car as it is and enjoy the performance and the handling. I just come back from a short 20mins down the road and have fallen in love with the once again lol
It has a nice, comfortable drive with great gains. It is an under-estimated car imo and it does my head in... ...a few small tweaks and the car is up to other sporty models' standards out there.

But yeah get good at gear changing and you'll be fine, no need to rag it and be smooth...

I can easily hit 60 (according to the speedo) in 2nd gear. If any of you lot were watching my somewhat truncated track session on Sunday I was easily doing that.

I didn't know you were on track (or even at ford fair ) or I would've watched. Did you do a sprint?

Yeeehhh I was on at 10am when this fool in a mk3 Escort drove past the escape road back to the pits and beached it in the gravel outside Brooklands. Chump. I overtook a raaaather sickly looking Focus RS (mk1) who had black smoke coming out its exhaust and this wee red mk3 Fiesta "pick up" truck. We managed 2 laps and that was that.. red flagged!

My pics are in the Forecourt section

I never go past 6500, not intentionally anyway I see it approaching 6500 and change a little late so its nearer 6900 sometimes but I've only bounced it of the limiter once as I thought I was in second at the time and planted my foot Nasty wiff after
