As some of you may have realised by my number of posts of replacement cars I want to replace the ST
I have realised its a bit stupid for me to go and blow 10k on a car when I need to save up for living on my own...
So I need some suggestions for replacements for the same sort of price I can sell the ST for...£4-5k
Been having a look at the Fiesta RS but would like more performance than the ST really
Help please

Can you narrow your criteria a bit?

Presumably 3 dr hatch is ok? Does economy come into it at all? Age of car?

Practicality isn't a problem
Economy doesn't matter too much
Age... probably 90s onwards..maybe 80s
I did think of other things to write but have forgotten now

I take it you mean fiesta rs turbo and not the rs 1800i, quick cars with the right mods.

I would personally go for an E36 M3

M3

Also found these two which seem well priced:

Type R

Elan

Really fancied an Elan a year or so ago, I'd probably get a different colour, but this looks alright

I take it the M3 engines are going to be fairly bullet proof seeing as they are BMW
Just most of them have a high mileage on getting towards 100k

You say economy isn't a problem or insurance etc... so wish to spend 4-5k... but...

When i tell you that my silver one is 4k a year to run and insure and my is 8k a year with less miles... does that make you think? I believe tha economy and insurane/tax + tyres and parts are HUGE factors in this car choice.

It's your choice to do it... but my advise is to open your eyes a little more and consider more than just the price of buying the car.

Old = parts and reliability is going to be bad and costly aswell as not having the mod cons that your use to in your smooth, nippy, grippy, comfy
New = possibly more expensive to insure, tax and fuel but less pricey in parts and more than likely won't let you down.

Why not just stick with your and then once you've got a place of your own buy yourself a Nissan 200SX and use it as a track car to play with?

Obviously the insurance is major part of what affects what car I buy
But the fact is something can go wrong with any car, luck of the draw,
More has gone wrong on my 05 astra and 54 fiesta than on my S reg fiesta
And on newer cars tends to be more expensive and unrepairable outside a garage

Not 100% sure what I want to do, just thinking of this as a possibility
Been going through cars for months now deciding what to do changing my mind every couple of weeks

The M3 engines are superb, provided they've been well maintained. As you'd expect with a high performance car it needs to be taken care of.

Check for a good service history on any M3, especially on the older ones because as they get cheaper to buy, you will get people that can't afford / can't be bothered to maintain them.

If you find a nice one, it'll be excellent fun to drive

Scott is right regarding costs, you have to consider the other factors, but in fairness, if you don't do a large mileage, the main costs are going to be insurance and probably a slightly worse fuel economy, which might be negligible to you.

Do look at the service costs and intervals with high performance cars before you buy though

I notice the Type R has almost the same torque as the ST
Does this make it slower through gears than cars of the same BHP? or do you just have to rev it higher?

I'm not exactly sure how that works to be honest Adam. Test drive it and you'll see it is plenty quick enough, revs high and when the vtec kicks in it is awesome, would definitely put it in your test drive list

If I was going second hand again, it would be a Type R without a doubt.
