Just wondered if anyone else had managed to get on the waiting list for an ST, i e-mailed my local dealer when the st made is debut and 3 weeks ago he rang and said all ford uk salesmen had just been on a training day with the ST and Zetec-s and told me everything he knew(which isnt anything different from what we know now), but what he did do was put me on the waiting list of which im due to be first in the uk to recieve an ST, he also said that before im guaranteed the car a payment has to be made to cover the cost of it being built as it will not be mass produced like other fiesta's.

I've got to be brutally honest, that sounds like a load of tosh to me, cover the cost of being built? That;s be a £7000+ deposit then please!! Also what's this about it not being mass marketed? That's the first I've heard of that. It'd be like selling the Focus ST170 or Mondeo ST220 in limited numbers, and I don;t see that being the case.

There is no way a dealer can say that you would be first to receive one, for that to be true your deposit would have to be with Ford directly, and not the dealer. Sounds suspicously to me like he has tried to wow you with his knowledge, dangles the carrot in front of you (being one of the first) and then tried to get you to commit.

As I understand it there cannot be a waiting list for a car that Ford has yet to confirm the price of. Sorry to put a bit of a downer on it all, but I am very sceptical of what you've been told.

its not a waiting list in the terms of there only being limited amounts, its in the way that the first ones off the production line will be going to the people who have madee contact with dealers, and its not being mass marketed in the way of other models in that they may make 100'000 cars and they need to be sold that year, if you wish to purchase one it is built when you've laid down you're deposit which has to be laid down before one is built because obvoiusly this model will not sell nearly as much as chepaer fiesta's. as far as the deposit goes they didnt mention a price but all new fords require atleast 10%.

Fair play to you mate. Get in their first - the sooner you get the car the better IMO. If you want to sell after 12 months or so it should be one of the first to hit the used market meaning pretty good values.

You'll also get loads of attention on the roads as no one will have seen one yet?

Out of interest, what colour / spec are you thinking of going for? Has the dealer given you any indication of pricing yet?

im 90% sure im gonna go for black, mainly because it will look ruder, although i prob would've gone for red but my current fiesta is red so i kinda need a change, ruled out silver simply because it wouldnt go with the seats at all. no indication yet of price but surely will be around £13500 same as seat ibiza fr?

I've got to be honest, I've never heard of Ford building cars to order in that manner, so I find it hard to believe that what you've been told is true! But assuming it is, the dealer is taking your 10% deposit, so £1300, and that will sit in their bank account making interest for them til November when the ST is supposed to be released. Nice little earner for them.

I hope that you do manage to get the car that way, but I seriously have my doubts!

no deposit has been taken yet as no-one knows what the price is gonna be but after speaking to the dealer at the weekend the list is so that they can base an idea of how many ST's will be built for production, so in otherwords if ford recieve little interest less will be built, so say every ford dealer in the uk only gets a certain amount those will be going to people who have made contact, but if all of the ST's are sold then youll still be able to purchase one just have to wait minnimum of 6weeks for the car to be built this is the same way ford have marketed the other ST models and is pretty much the same way all manufacturers build cars? so cant really see how its so hard to believe?

Thats not really what you said at the start of the post! And thats also not how Ford build all the cars. How do you think pre-registered vehicles are produced? Ford are well known for having fields full of ready built vehicles, waiting to be sold. Most manufacturers operate in a similar manner. They also have pre-registered Focus ST's as well, so they do not build them specifically to order.

I agree. The ST is such a mainstream model that they'll sell by the bucket load. I can't see them making them one at a time to order.
