Hi all, just wondering if anyone can advise me, as I'm trying to work out if I'm being messed about by a garage...

I took my 05 Fiesta TDCi in to get the clutch kit repaired last week and when I drove it away there was a metallic tapping noise, heard mostly when car was at standstill and when I depressed/raised the clutch pedal. I took it back and they said to see how it goes over the next 500miles and bring it back if it's still happening. Well the next day when i started the car, the noise appeared to have gone, but the engine light was now illuminted. I took the car back to the garage and they ran a diagnostic test, resulting in an error code p0405 EGR Sensor circuit low. I took the car home to do some research online about what this means...

I've had a look on this board and have found some really informative posts, but what I really want to know is, is there any way the work the garage did on my clutch could have instigated such an error code? Are clutches and EGR units related? Could they have knocked something or reconnected things badly at the garage???

Basically, being a lady with little understanding of engines, I'm afraid the garage might be trying to pull a fast one on me and attempt to make me replace the EGR sensor unit (v expensive I gather). I don't have a problem paying for repairs if they are completely seperate issues, but I'm concerned as having these two things happen at exactly the same time to a car which is not quite 5 years old and has not had anything go wrong to date is a bit conspicuous. Or maybe I'm just being paranoid???

BTW I found the post about cleaning out the EGR at home and will look into getting a friend to help me with this if it will help. Other info: car has 70k on clock.

Cheers, I hope this all makes sense and someone may be able to advise me further?

Ta, Petal xx

the clutch and the EGR unit which basically is a exhaust gas recirclation valve shouldnt be related, try taking it off and cleaning it as you've already said and go from there.

They may have disconnected the valve.

Get someone to check all the electrical connections at the rear of the engine are fully connected.

Clutch & EGR are not linked.

Thanks for your responses. I took it back and they said they checked the connections, but light is still on. I've looked around online a bit and now wondering if they could have knocked the sensor unit, which is meant to be set at a particular angle or something???

I haven't been able to remove the EGR unit to clean as I don't know where it is in the engine!! The pics and explanation I found online, though brilliant, were for a mondeo st and my engine looks nothing like it. (see here http://www.stdrivers.co.uk/forum/showtopic.php?tid/18882/all/1/)

My car is a Fiesta 1.4 tdci 2005, so I'm wondering if anyone could direct me to a diagram or photos of the unit inside this model so at least we know where to start?

Also, if we were to change the sensor ourselves (if it's actually knackered and not just out of line) where is that found on the egr unit??

Thanks for any assistance anyone can give xxx

if you can take the air filter, engine cover off and take a few pictures of your engine someone may be able to point you in the right direction
