Well we have ATF (automatic transmission fluid) at work and everybody seems to think I can use that if I change it. Any thoughts?

Personally i would use the recomended oil stated in the handbook. Gearboxes are expensive to repair.

A quote from a Ford internet search...

TRANSMISSION FLUIDS

Over the years, there have been a confusing array of different ATF types and specifications. Make sure the replacement fluid meets or exceeds all OEM requirements. Using the wrong type of fluid may cause transmission problems and damage.

I'm on about using it for the power steering because it's supposed to be the same stuff. I'm going to do a bit of research lol.

I've just got off the phone to the man who delivers oil. He mentioned that Titon stuff. It's about £11.80 a litre.

Yes ATF fluid can be used in power steering systems.

hi.
reviving the old topic :-).
Ok, I know everyone says that we can use the ATF red stuff in PAS and not the original expensive ford green "stuff" but I've been reading and in couple of places it is mentioned that there could maybe be problems with seals inside the system if different fluid is used. any thought?
cheers.

You will need an ATF Dextron III fluid for our power steering systems .. for you guys in the UK that's something like "CASTROL TRANSMAX DEX III MULTIVEHICLE"
(the top one in the Gold Bottle)

http://www.castrol.com/castrol/genericarticle.do?categoryId=9014115&contentId=7068179

You will only need a 1 Litre bottle to flush and fill so if you really worried just go and get the genuine stuff from Ford .. it surely can't be too much for just 1 Litre ?

Also here's a good guide from our friends in South Africa on how to change the power steering fluid .. it's a very easy job to do

I'm totaly confused now. On stoc they claim that green stuff is for electric power steering and should not be used in fiesta but ford dealer sold me green last year?

My power steering pump has gone. Getting done next week.

I'll make sure they change the power steering fluid at the same time.
