Is it possible to disable exhaust gas recirculation easily on the ? I think there was an easy hack possible on the Focus.

What is the point? All it will do is increase your fuel consumption slightly. EGR is only enabled at light load, so as soon as you accelerate it is shut off.

Exhaust gas is recirculated from the exhaust back into the intake manifold. This reduces peak in-cylinder temperatures, reducing NOx emission formation and reduces fuel consumption due to the reduced intake of fresh air. It is active at light load, ie on motorway cruises.

Hmmm, well after some more careful reading, maybe disabling EGR is not quite what I want . . . in fact maybe it's not working properly:
Basically, I feel like I'm fighting a losing battle with detonation... Ford so far haven't been much help (possibly just the local service centre, although, who knows). I've got to the point where it seems as if I'm going to have to solve the detonation problem on my own. I mistakenly assumed that EGR could make detonation worse, when it's the other way round.
I get deto when accelerating sharply (i.e. under load), but not lugging. The deto gets worse as the revs build. It seems to get better as the oil temperature reaches the correct temperature, but never goes away completely.
I have tried adding octane booster, but it didn't appear to help much (maybe slightly) - anyway, this solution is way too pricey. I also disconnected the battery and reset the ECU in the hope of it relearning the throttle map.
Should I change the oil (because of the correlation with oil temperature)? Try a full synthetic? Change to a colder plug? Change coolant? Decat in the hope of a cooler running engine? Check the fuel pressure?
Help!

Ryan is there any chance you could have some water in the fuel.It sounds similar to problems we have with the boats.

Ryan,
The Fiesta ST is designed to run on European 95 RON fuel. Is this the fuel you are able to use? I suspect SA uses 93 RON.
Can you check to see whether the dealer has attempted to set the dealer octane adjust in the ECU?

We have 95 unleaded here at the coast (inland gets the lower grade stuff, or used to, anyway).
Another thing I've noticed is that if I depress the accelerator in neutral, then release sharply, there's a tiny bit of a rumble from the exhaust, as if it were about to start popping (although it doesn't quite). I think it has ALMOST popped slightly once or twice (during braking). I'm not sure if that means anything, or if it's normal . . .
About the dealer adjustment - I'm not sure exactly what it's set to (sometimes I kind of wish I could just hook it up to a PC myself so I really know what's going on). When I asked the dealer to look at the problem, they did apparently contact Ford SA and apply some recommended settings, as well as reset the ECU.
Edit: Trawling through Google, I see GM recommend replacing the heat shield on certain vehicles when exahusting popping and pinging are occurring. I wonder?
