I have an MOT on Wednesday, and a few days ago I got a stone chip on the windscreen. I phoned Autoglass and they said it sounds too small and insignificant for them to do anything with right now.

It's about the size of a matchhead in diamaeter I guess. It's positioned on the driver side. If you imagine a horizontal line from the top of the steering wheel, it's about 3-4 inches below that line.

Will this fail an MOT? What are my options?

I don't want to use Autoglass and have them claim from my insurance as it stays on record for 5 years and increases premium - how much would it be if I just paid Autoglass to use their resin stuff?

My friend also told me that Halfords sell a kit to repair stone chips, basically the resin stuff. Anyone have any information or experience with those?

I think you should be ok unless it's right in your field of view. But I really dont know to be honest

strange of them to say that, bet there waiting for it to get bigger so they can charge you more especially when it starts getting colder, wouldent think it would effect the MOT if its so small though

Okay I've been reading about this.

If it's larger than 10mm in zone a (each edge of the steering wheel), it will fail. The chip isn't larger than 10mm, so technically, it should pass, maybe get an advisory.

I'll phone the MOT place tomorrow.

I don't want to go to Autoglass and use the insurance as you have to declare it for 5 years as a claim, regardless of whether or not it's just a repair, and that increases the premium.

My mate here in Malta accidentally put his wiper down on the windscreen and chipped it a little bit. Failed MOT. Sorry don't know about the rules there though.

I dont know about failing the APK (Dutch MOT) but here if you have either fully comp or the second insurance (fire and theft in the uk but i think ours is a bit more than that, we have roughly translated...3rd party, 3rd party plus or fully comp) then stone chips are normally filled in free of charge under ur insurance by carglass. It doesnt affect ur no claims either.

try another glass company. if you are fully comp all glass companies will do it for free and like gavin from autoglass says, 'it wont even effect your premium' when i broke my windscreen i used autowindscreens and the insurance payed up. also if you phone your insurance they will put you on to someone that they recomend and WILL pay foreverything

It doesnt' affect your no claims, but you must declare it as a claim for 5 years on new insurance, which jacks up the premium.

It's literally tiny. Probably about the size of a matchhead. I'm MOTing at Nationwide Autocenters with the halfprice offer on autotrader.co.uk, but I won't use them in the future as they are nazis. They told my friend his W-reg focus needed a new engine as a bit of black smoke came out of the exhaust. He has it serviced 3 months ago, so he took it back to the service garage and before he could tell them what was wrong, the guy said "Oh did they see some black smoke? That's just where the oil burns off after topping up." So N-A had tried to charge him £3k for a new engine that he didn't need.

Over here its covered in the insurance. Gave the carglass man a copy of my insurance card and the rest was sorted by them. No premium increase for chips here
