I had an e-mail from Halfords today regarding this. Clearly they want to cash in but the topic is interesting.

Quote:

Dear Scott,

New law in force this month

What is it?

New European law states that all new cars from February 2011 must be fitted with Daytime Running Lights.

Daytime Running Lights - What are they?

Daytime Running Lights (DRLs), are extra lights fitted to a vehicle to improve its visibility in daylight hours.

Tell me more about this

Why should I fit DRLs?

With DRLs fitted to your vehicle, studies show:

Other road users are more likely to see you coming
Pedestrian casualties are reduced during daylight
Accidents with other vehicles are reduced

Plus they give your car a modern looking style.

What do I need to do?

Nothing if you are buying a new car because it will already have the new lights fitted. Although not a legal requirement, many drivers of older cars who value the safety and style benefits of DRLs are fitting them too.

Ok... so, can anyone advise me of why I got fined for having my fog lights on if this saves lives and all that bullshit? I need someone to e-mail to vent my frustration... anyone got an mp's e-mail.

Because fog lights give a different beam pattern to DRLs.

I don't know about in the uk, but in Holland it will be the same.
Fogs are only to be used in bad weather (fog/snow/rain)
DRLs are basically a low voltage dipped beam (separate or built into main beam) while fogs are bright.
I believe its also illegal to drive with only fogs and no dipped beam...

DRL's look rubbish if used on anything but Audi's in my opinion.

Seen a few of them on chav-mobiles, and even seen some on clapped out saloon/people carriers

volvo lights are on all the time- looks ridiculous!
i also hate when you get a slight bit of rain or its getting mildly dark and everyone glares at you if you dont put your lights on- if you're glaring at me then obviously you can see me so why do i need to put my lights on?

Yes I understand this... but surely if they are highlighting the issues with people "not seeing you". This cannot be a fault if fogs are on during the day time. This way they have no excuse.

In the Silver focus the fogs are huge so can't get away with it. The they are smaller and round so kind of get away with decorative feature. I might change the bulbs for white/blue shaded ones so they look like day running lights.

would be okay-ish if they were just simple single bulb lights but they (the Law) have extended to multiple lines on none circular illuminations blinding others in dimmer conditions.

I'm not sure it was Audi's intention to be ripped off, then the law changed for ALL manufacturers to have this fitted. Funny though lol.

So these DRLs, are they the LED Audi style strips? Or are they instead any kind of light that you have on in the day that isn't too light.

I'm quite keen on angel eyes (led or cathode type) - would these suffice under the new rules if a manufacturer was to fit them on their cars - like BMW do for instance.
