Hi all, first post - here it goes:

Picked up my car last night (Black, Red interior). So far so good, except a rather loud whine from the engine! It sounds like a loud PAS pump (as with BMW Mini) or a really irritating supercharger (not that i'd complain if it had one!). Anyone had a similar thing?

It could just be tight belts being new and all, or even the PAS pump as with the mini, but just seems a little loud, especially at idle.

Thanks for any help

Tom

I don't remember anything as such on mine. Have you checked PAS fluid level and also does the noice attenuate or disappear when the car warms up?

Have you got the front heated windscreen on? It tends to whine then, it's the alternator when it has a high load placed upon it...

Is it from cold and goes when warm?

Does it change pitch with the engine speed? It sort of over runs when reving the engine.

Mine started to do this after 2 months.

It happens all the time whether cold or warm. Screen not on, PAS fluid OK.

I've located it to the drive pulley of the belt. Asked someone at work, he said possible just new tight belt with the extreme cold at the moment putting a little extra tighness into the system. I'll probably give it to 200miles and then take it in if it hasn't stopped.

It also dies down when engine is rev'ed, so goes away when the belt is spinning faster.

Will have to see how it goes

I'd keep an eye on it like you are and if you're still not happy then take it to your dealer. I know there was a problem with the PAS but that was way back with the early mk1 ST models. Something to do with fitting a Mondeo part instead of a Fiesta one.

Yep, just had a quick search and it was the Mondeo a/c compressor that was wrongly fitted to some early STs, before the end of February last year:

I have had a few engine whines.
I find that when I start the car up in a frosty morning I get a whining noise that sounds like the power steering pump, and it changes pitch when I rev. It seems to go after a few minutes and the car warms up.

i know some models suffered from anti-freeze compatibility with the water pump, made a whining noise but mainly when the engine got warm, think thy prob sorted it tho? sometimes rust on a pulley can cause a roughing sound?

i have a questioned this before and i get the same sound but you mostly notice it when its idling but rev it to 3k and its louder but when your driving the car it seems fine. But I have a alternator related question in technical talk and im maybe now thinking it could be my alternator drive belt thats causing the other problem and this problem.
