Last night when I was driving home on the dual carriageway when I heard a massive thud against my passenger side window. Initially I thought I had hit an animal, but when I pulled over at the next lay-by to assess the damage, it turned out the cover and mirror to my wing mirror had completely detached itself from the car, but the wiring and base remained. I was driving at the time, about 60-70mph, but there were no other vehicles present and I was driving in the left lane.
There is some cosmetic damage from the impact, including a small dent and some scratches, but I’m reassessing it this morning in the daylight and will upload some photos.
One thing to note is that earlier during the day I was regularly unloading my car and every time I shut the boot I heard a clunk/thud noise. I also noticed a bit of intermittent rattling on the car on the way home, but when I stopped at the services, I couldn’t find anything and didn’t even contemplate it could be the wing mirror.
Just a bit confused really as I am not technical in the slightest, but fail to see how the wing mirror could simply fall away? Are they easy to tamper with? I don’t want to pay out a fortune so am off to my local bodyshop today for a quote, but I was wondering if anyone here had experienced anything similar or could tell me how much a replacement wing mirror would cost?
Many thanks
