Just topped it up and put too much in. It's above the max level now
what should I do?

How much over? If a little should be ok.
Could drain it. If you don't have the proper draining tool get a tube (hose pipe) and cut it to a shorter lenght. Put it in the oil top up hole. Then put your finger over the end and take it out. Take finger off the end to let the oil out of the tube. Make sure you empty into a container.
Obviously use a bit of tube that is dry and has no liquid in it.

that's a good idea. Not sure if I have any tubing though

Yeah it's a fair amount over the max mark- I was using the dipstick to get some out then wiping it on a rag but it was taking ages and hardly removing any

Not a diesel?

I'm not an expert and hopefully some one will be along shortly, but if you overfill the engine oil won't it cause a higher pressure in the engine and potentially damage components? Guess it all depends by how much it's over filled by.

Another option if you don't have a tube unscrew the drain plug to let some oil out. May be interesting putting it back in though with oil coming out

There was oil on my cossie inlet when i opened it up, was told it's normal to have a bit of oil coming in, so i can imagine it wil be the same with the standard inlet?

yeah a little bit it's from the crankcase apparently something to do with ventilation.

a little is normal but like thick glupey stuff no normal for a low milage car that's likely to have been overfilled with oil.

this inlet i had was caked in it at the bottom you could see the difference of this stuff and the carbon deposits.

To much oil can be as bad as to little, if its only just over the max mark dont worry to much, but if its well over drain some out, I have seen some cars not start because the owner has overfilled the engine with oil and locked the hydraulic followers up, (solid on st) and also a renault diesel that would not turn off and rev high cos it was running on the engine oil after it was turned off.

straight forward if the engine isn't in the car but it wont be easy when it's in your have to take the slam panel out and the bumper to get to it all without cocking it up.

Honestly mate i wouldn't worry too much about it, if your talking millimetres.
