Yeah, some people do take it for granted i suppose. But they do know how to drive properly. I passed my test almost a year ago now and i always check all my mirrors and always signal correctly.

Well I've been driving 24 years this summer and when I took my test it lasted for about 35 mins and when I'd finished he asked me about 5 questions on the highway code and that was it, passed first time and cost me £12 it was too easy. For the first year I drove like a bloody maniac, had three minor smashes in that time.  Is the test better now. Yes!! I have to agree with ST GTR, my son passed his test last month and could not believe how intensive it was with theory, hazards and finally the driving test. Am very impressed with his driving and techniques and he seems alot more responsible driving at 17 than I certainly was!

I don't think the tests are hard enough!
Driving a car is operating a piece of machinery, therefore you should have a basic understanding of how that machinery works and general maintenance eg, changing a wheel, changing oil and filter, spark plug removal, opening the bonnet!!!
Also, the test should include being on a skid pan to show you understand what to do in the event that you get out of control.
Also, similar to Motorcycles, you should be limited to 1000cc or 50BHP until you are 21 years old and have calmed down a bit, with a limited top speed of 60mph.

As part of the driving test they do now ask you a few basic questions. I had to show my examiner where i'd check the oil on the car, how to fill up the washer bottle etc. Whie I do agree with you to an extent I think that if you had to teach mechanics to learner drivers it would put lots of people off, and also most people just take a car to a garage if it breaks.
One things I definately agree with is the limit on the engine size of a car that young drivers can own. I think they should be limited to a maximum of a 1.4 or smaller until they get to 21. I deliberately bought a low powered car that was easy to drive when i first past my test so that I could learn to drive. After keeping that for a year and feeling more confident I bought my Leon. Certainly the best decision I could have made.

Couldn't agree more. I think the first year of driving you should be limited to a small engine size, as i had my 1.1 engine for almost a year and it has made me a better driver. But i don't agree on the maximum speed of 60 mph, i think that could be dangerous on the motorway, as my 1.1 could just about do 70 mph, and it was dangerous when you had to overtake lorries and stuff.
But yeah that wouldn't be a bad idea to limit engine sizes on youngsters. But you know how they get in their 1.1 engines. It's like they have something to prove.

Just worked it out Ive been driving 29 years. Lesson cost me £3 each back then.
My first car was an MK1 Escort 1.1 and cost an arm and leg to insure (£90 Third party fire and theft) So inreal terms I guess insurance hase gone through the roof.

HGVs are limited to 56MPH
