Got an old laptop that wouldn't mind getting running again just to run music off for my sonos
But everytime I turn it on I get a blue screen and says

"UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME"

Any ideas as to what this actually means
Would it require a new harddrive to get it running or is it a windows problem?

Thanks

Sounds like the RAM has gone to me.

You can buy new sticks of it

well the only thing i can think of is the hdd has an error if you have the installtion disc insert that and boot up the laptop then you will have a welcome screen appear click r then the dos will appear, type in chkdsk/p click on enter then once its done type in fixboot then click enter then it will ask you for a yes or no type y. after thats done type in exit and click on enter that will restart your laptop.
thats the easiest way to explain if you not a computer geek like me hope it helps adam.

Not RAM related, its a fault with the file system.

Boot from an XP CD
Launch the Recovery Console (press R when prompted, NOT F2 for automated recovery)
Select your Windows partition
type in the following commands.

chkdsk /r
fixboot
fixmbr

Usually, chkdsk /r is enough to solve it, but the other two commands rewrite the boot sector.

A Vista or 7 DVD will also work, but when you see the Windows setup screen, press Shift-F10 and use that command prompt instead, appending C: to your commands.
