I guy I used to work with has just ordered a new and is adamant he doesn't have to pay any road tax because it has an eco boost engine. I tried telling him that it doesnt work like that. He said it one of the reasns why he bought it... Surely he's wrong???

The tax is 125 quid a year, you have to produce less than 75g/km for it to be free

The new fez produces 138g/km and is in band E

What an idiot

Pretty sure the C02 band for no road tax is still anything of 100g/km or below

I've had a look at this and it's still less than 100g/km to qualify for zero road tax. I know Boris is cutting the threshold to be exempt for the congestion charge due to too many cars qualifying and it wouldn't surprise me if a similar thing happenned with road tax at some point.

There is a lower rate for the first year of ownership for any car in Band D or below which means they pay no road tax for the first year. Band D is 130g/km and below so maybe he misread it as 128 rather than 138?

Here in Norway you pay the same amount regardless of driving a little Fiesta or a big v8 car. around 300£ a year. For diesel cars without an particle filter it is 350£.

Think that's more fair. Even though it's too expensive and a lot of the money goes to other things than roads/transportation. Not right to pay extra for schools and stuff because you're driving a car.

How is this in Britain? What do they use the road tax money on?

dont get me started on road tax in NL
its a rip off whether you drive a petrol or a diesel

(my petrol ZS was £310 a year, my Leon is about £510 a year, a small light diesel, like the zs tdci is at least £850 a year)

Woman at work recently brought a insignia 2.0 diesel and her tax disc says nil. I think they are doing somthing with new cars for the first year. Might be wrong

It all depends. For the higher bands it is - in some cases much higher! - but for the lowest bands you get it free for the first year.
