ok this is mainly directed at gareth as he travelled from the lake district to london (i think it was london) i was just wondering how much it cost you in petrol there and back? i'm travelleing to brighton and back (via silverstone of course) and i'm not sure of how much money i'd need for petrol. Its roughly 1000 miles maybe less and mainly on motorway, and i do drive sensibly. honest- ask anyone! so does anyone have a rough figure. i did the same distance in a 1.25i fiesta last year and it cost about £30-£40. obviously it will be more, but roughly how much more? relevant figures plesae. dont try to scare me with the £150 figures. unless it will be that much!

Well, I drive mainly to work on 50 mph roads in 5th, guess that's about as good driving type as you can for fuel. I get about 150 miles per £20 so by that you would be looking at around £130 to £150 for 1k miles..

If your car consumes petrol at 32mpg and petrol prices are 96.9p you are looking to spend £140. So if we say 1 gallon equals 4.55 litres we divide the mpg by 4.5 to get miles per litre which is 7 miles to a litre. So divide the 1000 mile trip by miles per litre which is 7 to give you a figure of 143 litres. Times the price at the pumps (0.969p) by litres (143)and you get one unhappy bunny or £139!

Wrong person to ask, I wasn't hanging about on the way back done a full tank (well 40 litres) in 189 miles, on that basis it would cost you approx £125 to do 600 miles. however sensible driving 65-70mph should cost about £80

I've found the official definitions of the two and they are:

"Urban cycle
The urban test cycle is carried out in a laboratory at an ambient temperature of 20°C to 30°C on a rolling road from a cold start, i.e. the engine has not run for several hours. The cycle consists of a series of accelerations, steady speeds, decelerations and idling. Maximum speed is 31 mph (50 km/h), average speed 12 mph (19 km/h) and the distance covered is 2.5 miles (4 km).

Extra-urban cycle
This cycle is conducted immediately following the urban cycle and consists of roughly half steady-speed driving and the remainder accelerations, decelerations, and some idling. Maximum speed is 75 mph (120 km/h), average speed is 39 mph (63 km/h) and the distance covered is 4.3 miles (7 km)."
