Hello Lads/ Ladesses

I'm a little bored of the nana spec oc my st and without spending silly $ shipping in a miltek system or similar would like to get the fester singing a little nicer.

To achieve this I'm considering hacking out either the silencer or back box and welding in some straight pipe in the hopes I might get a few more pops and bangs and a little more rasp...

I know ideally the solution I to drop a whole new system in, though... This is not an option I am willing to consider... So rangi miss for me for the mo.

Thanks all

http://www.millteksport.com/stockists.in.cfm?countryid=83&country=New%20Zealand aren't there any companies in NZ that can provide you with an exhaust for a reasonable price without have to pay a fortune in shipping? If not maybe it's a good idea to make mods but I reckon it's important that your car will pass MOT with your exhaust so you don't get big trouble if your car don't meet the required standards and you sitting there with an modded original exhaust that you can't fix (noise)(Don't know how strict this is in NZ)

Hey mate,

Thanks for the reply.

You are right, I don't want anything that's going to make my car illegal. The WOF (not MOT in NZ) is strict, garage dependant, though we do not have emission requirements like the UK.

A Miltek Exhaust system would be ideal, and they are available locally, though this is really more than I would want to spend on my ST.

As such, to get a little extra noise outta the current system, would like to explore the above mods. I don't believe this will make a silly loud drone which will affect my WOF, though hope it may help to induce a few more crackle and pops and jjust sound a little less... tame.

Would be cool to hear from people who have done the above n a standard system and could advise?

Thanks for your reply mate happy

Straight pipes would sound bonkers loud tho wouldn't it???

It may also affect your performance in a negative way due to the way your car would now be breathing hmm

Hey Rob,

I am only considering the removal of the resonator/silencer OR the back box muffler, not both, as you said that would be crazy loud.

Wouldn't think that the removal of one of the other of them would create too much additional flow, especially given there location right at the back of the system?

Surely someone has done this and could post a vid? There are a couple vids on youtube, but really bad quality...

The only experience I have with this is where I got the mid-box removed on my old 1.25 Fiesta - I already had an Ashley backbox though, and transformed the noise. It made more of a difference than the backbox did on its own.

If I were to decat the existing system... are the red lines where I would look to insert the new piece of straight pipe?

What is that silly little kink?

Additionally, if I were to deres also, would this re-rout the pipe under the rear axle? I hear that stupid over the axle design is hugely restorative in the system

Yep, that's it.

I think it's a mixture of more restriction from Ford, and somewhere for the O2 sensor to plug in!

I have a deres pipe and the best place for it is above the rear axle, there's quite a big cutout up there, underneath the axle is just asking to scrape along the floor.

Easiest way to swap everything over, jack the car up on the rear axle, as high as you can go. Unclip the ABS sensor wire from the rear beam. Put axle stands underneath the chassis rails at the back of the car, remove the wheels, remove the bottom shock absorber bolts, and drop the rear axle back down using the trolley jack. That gives you loads of clearance and you can then rotate the exhaust out in one whole piece.
