My clutch feels like it is close to giving up and I can smell it burning quite often now, so I'm getting an uprated clutch and probably going to get a Quaife LSD fitted as well, as it's a perfect opportunity to get it done and save a bit on labour as the gearbox will be coming out anyway.

Has anyone had it done to their st and what kind of improvements can I expect?
Anyone else that's had an LSD in a fwd car, is it a massive difference from an open diff?

Quite excited about having this done, the car is really good now, but I'm hoping an LSD will be a big improvement as well.

happy

I've been told that it completely changes the car. You can just keep you foot planted and it will hold line perfectly. That's coming from 106 GTI's and other small, light hatches

Open diffs are quite simple pieces of kit, the LSD's on the other hand are extremely clever and will work out exactly what kind of power needs to go to each wheel, the open diff just chooses power to one wheel and keeps it there. I wish i had fitted one in the MR200 as ive just done my clutch and it would benefit massively on the track and loss of grip on normal roads ( wet conditions etc )

The diff in the RS was amazing, plant your foot in a corners and you can feel the steering wheel pull into the corner. It felt like if i let go of the wheel it would keep turning on its own, very odd sensation.
Does make the car a bit jumpy in the wet tho, instead of inside wheel spinning the power goes to the outside and the car leaps across the road lol

Sounds strange lol
Why's that then? A bit like torque steer or understeer or something?

Probably a bit to do with turbo lag & bald tyres also, but much more jumpy & nervous in the wet.

I got a quote from Jam-Sport and was going to go for the diff, but decided not to for two reasons:

i) Clutch+release beraing is £600 fitted, LSD is another £900 fitted when you include bits like gearbox bearings. Removal of gearbox in order to do the clutch is £200 labour, so I'd be spending £900 to save £200, if you see what I mean.

ii) I'm not confident that the gearbox is in good condition, for example hard to get into gear after start-up, and hard to get into 1st and 2nd when cold unless I double de-clutch (worn synchros?) so might need a gearbox recondition so might as well re-consider my options later on.

Gonna get the orgainc clutch though as I do hard launches quite often.
Clutch really needs doing - I got burned off at the lights today by a BMW because I didn't want to slip the clutch too much and it bogged down lol

Ideally I'd like to have a go at doing just the clutch myself, but worried it might be too complex a job for me to take on.
I imagine it's - hubs off, driveshafts out, speedo drive and selector linkages off, gearbox mounts off, gearbox/bell housing off, clutch off - then it's more a question of wether I am capable/patient enough and how tricky it is.

Has anyone here done a clutch change? hmm

Buy a seperate gearbox, then diff, then clutch etc etc. If you do it in stages it wont seem as tho your forking out as much at once.

While its out having the clutch done, its the perfect time to get it done to save money.
But, if you're concerned about the life and condition of the gearbox, then it might well be worth having a box thats fresh with an LSD to swap out with yours.

I though people starting destroying gear boxes when they had the lsd fitted because of the plastic case bearings and they couldn't take the power

Yeah, that was my plan originally.
I'd be saving £200 labour if I got it done at Jam-Sport, but it would still be another £900 to get the diff done.
Gearbox just doesn't feel as good as it used to though.

How many miles is it on? might well be worth getting the oil changed. You'd be amazed at how much better it can feel!
