I should add, I've averaged better economy out of an S-TypeR than I have a Focus ST the same journey.....

For the moment that couldn't be further from the truth.

Agreed!

For the moment that couldn't be further from the truth. 1 year old examples with 15k miles are being traded in with dealers (notoriously mean) for £16k. Production has been throttled right back from the start so the market isn't flooded with them. Demand > Supply = Good residuals.

It's a trick Porsche are very good at.

That said I am truly shocked and dissapointed by the Focus ST's fuel economy. Frankly I think it's pathetic and whilst you might claim that it's a sports car don't think about it etc..etc.. my Skoda Vrs (180bhp) averages an easy 40+mpg on a run and when being thrashed like yesterday (was in a hurry so 30miles across country) only dropped to 28mpg for the journey. I guess the Boxster is an unfair comparison but it puts out 20bhp more that the Focus and easily returns an average of 33mpg to a tank given a variety of driving conditions and styles.

I'm not sure what it is they do but Ford cock it up somwhere. Compare it to the Astra VXR if you don't like my examples....

I was considering a Focus ST before I bought my Fiesta. What ultimately put me off was the fuel economy. Spent alot of time on the forums and by the sounds of it you'll be lucky to get more than 20 to the gallon - even if you drive conservatively.

The Focus uses a Volvo five cylinder engine.

I had a Volvo 5 cylinder engine in my V70 AWD which I believe was a pretty similar engine except it ran with a low pressure turbo. However it still pushed out 200 bhp. Bearing in mind the weight of a Volvo estate, plus the fact that mine was AWD as well, I was getting around 26mpg. So, why is the Ford Focus, a lighter car, doing considerably less? More boost doesn't mean more fuel used!

Well more boost on the same engine increases the potential to burn more fuel, you will then burn more fuel if you use that potential. But you are right, for the same performance on a car of similar weight why should one burn more fuel than the other? The first thing that comes to mind is that the ST having a "sporty" orientation, it gives a natural invitation to be driven harder. If you go out for a test dive in a Focus ST aren't you going to "floor" it once or twice to see what it's got? This may not be the case with everyone driving the Volvo.

Additionally, with blown engines consumption can vary by a substantial amount and I see this with my Escort - if I manage to drive sensibly and keep the speed down I can reduce consumption by a quarter than when I drive "normally". Put your foot down and it quickly goes up by a quarter from "normal".

The bottom line IMO is that if you have the potential to use the power, you are invariably going to use it...

Oh it most certainly does! Basically speaking, more air means more fuel otherwise it runs lean and you melt pistons.

Having talked to a lot of people about their ST's 24-26 (on a run) is the norm for average driving. Like on any turbo car though the more you play, the more you pay.

The thing that gets me though is that my Skoda is Turbo'd (audi TT engine) and it'd take a track day to get the economy as bad as the daily average for an ST and yet their performance isn't that dissimilar. It must be all down to emissions control but like I say, compare it to the Astra VXR which is faster and much more economic. They're doing something very wrong, sadly, as otherwise I'd already have bought a Focus ST.
