I've moved this from the bottom of another post - I shouldn't have hijacked!

Hi there!!! Sorry to bob in as a Newbie on this post, but exactly the same has just happened to my 57 plate ST (for the second time in 18 months). Shattered spring, smoking on the tyre and a kink in the brake line. All fixed I thought, new spring, new tyre Great!!!... £135... Oh if only :-)

On the drive home I notice the brake pedal will either sail straight to the floor or regain pressure with pumping. It's higher but spongy when the engine is off. Clearly this isn't right so I've taken it back to the garage thinking they'd just not bled the brakes fully. They got back to me yesterday to say they've rebled everything, checked for leaks, and there is no change. They've done the usual and read the fault codes and come up with the AbsPump. However (this is another story in itself!!) the car has the issue with the permanent ABS light issue and the code has been there for about 5 years with no issue.

They are now jumping straight to the conclusion that its the abs pump, completely discounting the symptoms of it being an issue with the master cylinder or just air in the ABS pump (a bit of an issue to bleed by accounts?) or even an issue with the caliper piston now the break line has been 'unkinked'... and just outright saying I need to replace the pump (£££££££££)....

I'm not (*edit'completely') clueless but I'm feeling a little bit like the 'little woman arguing with the garage'. Is there anyone that can please give me some advice?

Vix xxxx

Sounds like quite a dangerous situation

First off, why did they bleed the brakes? Did they fit a new brake pipe?
If so, could be worth getting someone else to check they're bled properly.
I can't see how it would get air into the abs pump.

The pedal going to the floor can be a sign of the master cylinder leaking internally.
The seals can get damaged when bleeding as you are pushing the pedal past it's normal travel which can damage the seals in the cylinder.

If they're being arsey, try going to a different garage for a second opinion.
