It's mainly to do with the compressor seizing. If its left for ages the oil will go off(can't remember the proper word for it) and block the pipes. The compressor will run but it will choke so no cold air comes out and kill the compressor. It works the same way your fridge does. I don't know if ford check it in the service. I know they do the filter. Just leave it on for a little bit every month and you won't have any problems. Also don't turn it on off on off realyy quick because that will knacker it as well.( don't know why you would want to)

Also the seals will dry up if a/c is not used. If they crack then it can cause refridgerant leaks.

I've read somewhere that you should run your a/c system for 10mins every month to keep the gas flowing and the seals in tact.
I don't bother as I won't be keeping the car into old age (6+yrs)
The a/c system on the ST drains power very badly.
I don't use mine at all.
