Quick question guys,

My drivers side window is playing up a bit but I'm just trying to work out what needs replacing.

These are the symptoms:

- Goes down with no problem.
- Coming up is a little hit and miss but most of the time it just is not having it and I speed sometimes 5 minutes continuously clicking away at the button before it finally comes up.

There are now faulty sounds i.e. motor grinding etc which is leaving my proper baffled. I was just wondering if any one has even had a similar problem or an idea on which piece I should replace first?

I've had the door card off and had a look to see if anything was loose but all seemed fine. The only other thing that I can say is that when the window is half down there is a kind of rattle coming from the rear (pillar side) but when fully open it makes no sound.

As always grateful for any input as on parts/problem solving I may need.

Also just incase its relevant - My car is a pre-facelift 2005 ST.

Thanks!

Bit of a guess but the grinding noise could be teeth slipping.
There is a plastic gear coming from the motor if you can see the gear behind the door card there might be damage on it. Wouldn't solve the underlying issue of what made is making it slip though, which could be because of resistance on the mechanism or the window or something.

First off try lubing the window channels either side.

There's only two components for the window, the motor and the regulator. It sounds like it could be your motor slipping teeth (plastic cog on motor is a bit pony), or alternatively there's an issue with your regulator. Take the inner door skin off too to see the regulator and see if anything is obviously wrong.

Thanks both for the replies.

I was thinking it's the motor but just wanted to asked before I jumped in. I guess worse case scenario is if it's not the motor then I replace the regulator and fingers crossed it would be like new.

Are the regulators hard to replace? The motor is obvious just the 3 nuts and disconnect just wonder if the reg was more a garage job than a DIY.

Is there any possibility that the switch could be the problem? I read somewhere about low voltage pontentionaly? I might of mid-understood but just those get I'd throw that in there.

Now the weathers nice I'll give it a proper stripped down and check over it all.

It's doable yourself. Just make sure you have good weather as you'll be removing the door locks, and window glass.

I doubt its the switch myself. I've got a technical manual at home, I'll post the relevant instructions here for the window regulator.

Something to bear in mind is I've had both my side windows worked on at different places, and since then for some reason the rain doesn't get wiped off when I put them down, which is annoying. They probably butchered the job.

Never rains, it pours! I had a window motor, starter motor and rocker cover gasket go in the space of a week or so.

One observation I had with the window instructions was removing the glass - the guide says to undo the window glass clamp bolts. There weren't any on mine, just the clips. Not sure if that is pre-facelift only?

Just a quick *Update*

I had the door apart and turns out it was a bad switch that controls the windows. Replaced that and all seemed well.

I now have a slightly annoying problem which I never had before since repairing the initial problem. When the window is completely closed and then you go to drop it down you get a horrible "Clunk" like its sticking. I've lubed up all the seals but that hasn't seemed to help anyone have any ideas? I only took the door card off so haven't gone deeper than that so nothing else that I have touched should of caused it. It happens with both the door card on or off.

I still think regulator or motor. A switch fault wouldn't cause a grinding noise. It sounds like the gear teeth are damaged on either the regulator or the motor and the clunk is them locking into place.

Either that, or check where the glass clips into the regulator, could be loose there.

Is it quite a loud bang that it does? I have that on the passenger side and can actually see the glass tilt a bit when it makes the clunk. It's like one side of the glass goes up slower than the other and then it suddenly tilts back when you put it down. Try putting the window back down slightly when it's 75% to the top before closing it and that will reduce the clunk next time you open it if it's anything like mine.

Sorry I have no idea what it is but I've never investigated, been doing it for years and I just live with it.

That's definitely a regulator fault.
