Hello guys and girls. I'm new to this forum and came across this as im searching for a solution. This seems the most knowledgeable and experienced forum.

Looking for a bit advise. I have bought this car and it seems to have a few electrical issues. I have been having an issue with the horn not working. I have checked the fuse and replaced the horn unit but still not working.
I removed the steering wheel yesterday to investigate further, unfortunately my electrical knowledge is VERY limited and was hoping a wire was loose or missing. Instead I have added a picture below as it looks like the wiring has been butchered by previous owner as wire is stripped and another wire spliced in. The picture is taken from the top of the steering wheel before I had even removed the airbag. The red wire ran down the steering column and has been cut after about 3 ft of cable. Any idea why this has been spliced? I was thinking the wire was broken and ran a separate wire but why not just cut it completely? This morning I connected a 17amp wire to the red wire and linked it straight to the horn unit, reconnected battery and turned ignition on and pushed the horn but still not working. I'm at my wits end with it was hoping when bought the car would be an easy fix.
Any help appreciated. Thanks

UPDATE: now totally confused I have now wired up horn using one terminal as a possitive connection and one terminal?as negative to confirm it works. I have then wired up original cable that was connected to the horn unit which was already connected but not the red wire butchered behind the steering wheel. So I wired that up and connected another wire to the negative terminal on the battery and it constantly went off. Why wont it work correctly???

That is strange, so the horn worked correctly when connected with standalone wiring but when connected to the one on the loom it went off continuously? Electrics arent my strong point either but as a guess it sounds like a short on the wire, but that wouldn't explain why someone spliced in the red wire as I'm not sure what that would achieve.

Yeh I wired it using 2 cables one terminal to + on battery and other going to the - terminal as it's a 2 terminal horn. That worked fine but when wired up original wire which was connected to the old unit and then attached other terminal to - on battery it sparked slightly and went off constantly. Dont understand why the red wire is their either cos wouldnt make a difference unless the original cable was broken.......I'm so confused. Think it needs a spark after lockdown.

UPDATE: I have now tested the red wire from the steering wheel to the horn and negative to the horn and constant horn sounds. Also tried the original wire and negative to the horn and constant sound. So ive now removed the red wire altogether and attached the original old wire to horn but still no further forward with wiring up neg terminal. If the relay isnt giving the signal to turn off the horn could the relay be broken or is there another issue. Sounds to easy.
